Comment:

When I boot, I get the following error:

02B2: Incorrect Drive A type - run setup

I ran setup and given the choices for the A drive, I think it's right. Can someone help a laywoman fix this?

Thanks!

Did you set it up as a 1.44mb drive? There are probably 3 to 5 choices, but for a 'standard' floppy, this is the setting to use.

did you do anything inside the comp before the problem ? You could have the 31/2" drive in the 51/4" drive ribbon cable slot, the 31/2 needs to be on the last connector of ribbon cable.

No, I didn't go inside the comp. I got the comp. from my dad and don't remember whether the error was there when I got it. Since I got it, I've spent a lot of time deleting his work files. Could I have deleted something I needed?

It might be that the cmos battery is bad. Try running setup and select no floppy drive A:orB: and change the boot order , boot drive c: first . Yes you could have deleted something that was needed. did it boot up to winXX or other os? thinking about the a: drive you may have a 51/4" drive, dont know when they stopped makeing them. Is the opening for floppy about 31/2 X 1/2 or more like 5X1/4" ?

Thank you so much for continuing to help me. I will try your suggestions and come back here. Please stick with me!

The computer is a newer Dell (maybe a few years old). So, yes, it's a 3 1/2 floppy.

Based on the thread that you forwarded, it looks like the A drive could have gone bad, right?

I went into the set up and tried everything. I switched the boot order, I disabled the A drive (which caused another error message), I tried all the different kinds of floppy drives, etc. Nothing helped.

Why is the A drive (floppy) listed under removable devices? Under removable devices, it says "Legacy Floppy Drives." I don't seem to have any other options there either.

Should I assume that the A drive is malfunctioning? I don't use it. I wish I could just disable it without the computer sending me an error message telling me that it's disabled!

If I accidently removed a file pertaining to the A drive, is there any way to reconfigure it?

the drive could be bad. the a: drive is removabe device ie. you can remove the diskett there for removabe device. It might be disableing the floppy will not be enough, it might be seeing it and will not remove the device you may have to open case and disconnect the ribbon cable going to it. You my need a floppy if you deleted files on the hdd that is need to boot. As far as you last post you can not remove any file that will cause the comp. to fail POST ( computer self testing) testing it has not yet read any disk files. to get more info from others with same problem do a google search for (02b2 errors) many hits. will return to try and help pls post back when fixed. Rereading your post #8 what was the error when you disabled a: and changed to boot c: drive first? If it was invaled media type,no meia found, or some others you WILL HAVE TO HAVE A FLOPPY DRIVE, HDD MESS UP.
