Subject: Incorrect Display AdapterOS: Win98CPU/Ram: P3 500, 512MB |
Comment: After recently having to format this old POS PC for the third time, I have reinstalled Win98 as well as my video driver, direct from the Nvidia website. Now whenever I have to reboot my computer, which happens a lot after a format, either windows will not boot up at all or when it does, I get this error message about the display adapter (you all know the one). This computer is not my primary machine. I mainly use it for print jobs. But the graphic settings have to be 800x600 16 bit or higher in order for my software to work. I cannot adjust my display settings because I can't get past this error message that occurs upon startup - if windows starts up at all. Safe mode only has 16 color so I cannot adjust settings from there so my publishing software will work. If by some miracle I get back into windows at regular settings, if I have to adjust my display, I get stuck having to reboot, which sticks me with the error message again. Help me, please.

Reply: (edit)Let's pretend for a minute that we don't know the message you refer to. We probably do, but your question might be a little clearer if you let us know which one. Are you certain that the video card is indeed a NVidia? Mayhaps an older driver might work better. Good ol' 98 is beginning to get a little long in the tooth. Manufacturers are beginning to believe that we really do all use XP.

Reply: (edit)The card is a Geforce 2 MX 100 64MB. I know because I installed it myself a couple years ago. As I said, I installed the latest version of forceware, 77.72. The error message is as follows: There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware. It happens every time I boot up and when I exit out of the error msg, the PC crashes and I end up with a black screen. If I try to use the PC at 16 colors, after setting it in safe mode, I get errors from 5 different programs that require 800x600 16 bit color. Then I crash again from multiple errors.

Reply: (edit)If you can keep the computer running long enough. Right click on my computer, then select properties. In the device manager tab, delete all the references to the display adaptor and then reboot. The computer will want to reinstall the drivers. This in itself might fix the problem. If it still has the problem, try an older driver from the archives.
