Apparently, Windows 95 (even with all available updates) does not come with full MP3 functionality. I transferred my MP3 collection to my Win95 laptop and noticed that some of them simply refused to play. I've looked at every possible file and MP3 attribute and so far I can't find any rhyme or reason to it. Is there any place I can download full-featured MP3 codecs that will work with Windows 95 (WMP 6.4)?

I am not that familiar with Win95 or WMP6.4.
Could it be that it can not handle MP3 files with a bit rate of greater than, let's say, 160kbps or similar?
I ask because I have never had a MP3 that wouldn't play and I have never downloaded a codec for any of them.
Could it be similarly related to the amount of RAM you have? You are not using a fixed swap file size are you (Min and Max set)?
Just throwing out ideas,
Bryan

I field every one of those ideas. =)
You see, I was able to play a certain MP3 at 196kbps. However, then I go to another that is at 128kbps and is _smaller_ than the previous one, and it won't play.
Plus, it gives the error message that a codec could not be found, so it's not an out of memory or swap space issue.
I went into my sound editing program and did a thorough check, comparing the files I can't play with the ones I can. There's absolutely no difference in most cases, right down to the "Private" bit and the padding type. Frankly, I'm bamboozled!

Apparently you didn't even take the time to read that post. The title even says "MP3 codecs", whereas the web site you mention contains only video codecs.

I am familiar with Win95(A) and WMP6.4 - although I never use it to play audio (prefer IrfanView or the old WinAmp).
Usually WMP will try and access the net for missing codecs.
Under 'control panel' 'multimedia properties' 'advanced' 'audio compression codecs' I have no less than 12 - some of which were definitely installed when updating 'video' (indeo, DivX).
Never had a problem (so far) with MP3s.
Low RAM & processer speed could be a performance issue, but that wouldn't generate a missing codec message.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then give up. There's no sense being a damn fool about it.

Have you tried playing them in another player such as Quicktime (if you have it).
I use WinAmp 2.8 but am on Win98SE and have never had a problem. I have IrfanView but never tried playing a MP3 with it.
Will the same files play on another machine?
Sorry but I am guessing here.
Bryan

If I'm not mistaken, it shouldn't make a difference - if the codec is installed, the player can use it.
Irfanview can play most multimedia formats (if the codecs & its own plugins are installed)
Occasionally problems occur under 95 because WMP6.4 is (pretty much) the highest version that can be installed - newer M$ codecs (some WMV for instance) won't install without WMP7 or higher.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then give up. There's no sense being a damn fool about it.
