I had problems upgrading from 98 to xp. The first try installing said setup could not continue because it was unable to create a temp file. Got past this by booting from the cd. Setup seemed to go well until reboot, which served up "the blue screen of death". Called ms support. After 4 hours on the phone setup finally went through without a hitch. (can't wait for my next phone bill)
Upon booting I now have a choice of booting to the incomplete install or the complete install. A no brainer to be sure, but, the incomplete install says it's occupying 1.4 gigs on my hard drive.
The wonderful man from ms support that helped me (he was really nice and didn't make me feel like a total moron.) doesn't know how to remove the incomplete install so that my puter has more free space and it will boot without having to choose which install to boot from.
Does anyone know how to remove the incomplete install? I did a file search for I386 and there are two system files, each exactly the same, and two driver files, one in C:\WINDOWS and one in C:\C001.
I assume that the one in the windows file is the working one and the one in c001 is the incomplete install file.
Now the questions at hand. Will the incomplete install cause problems seeing as how it's a choice upon boot? Is there a wizard of some sort that can help uninstall the incomplete install? OR Does anyone know how to get rid of the incomplete install? 1.4 gigs is a lot of space to be hanging around being unusable.
And I'm afraid that one of my kids may suffer from a giant brain fart and try booting from the incomplete install just to see if it works, and crash the puter.
Thanx in advance for any help.
uni

No problems there unicornb:
Working bottom up with your q's. If the kids run up the wrong version the system will restart and they get to choose the right one!
To determine in which directory the 'good' XP is located, click START> ALL PROGRAMS> ACCESSORIES>
then right click on any utility or tool that is available, such as Command Prompt.
choose properties
in the Command Prompt properties window, clcik on the button that reads FIND TARGET.
It should open up a window with the address bar reading:
a] c:\windows\system32
or
b] C:\C001\system32
This will let you know where your 'running' system is pointing and you can remove the 'dead' one.

Only 1 file came up: System 32.
Files from a-z, no duplicates. Did I maybe do something wrong? Or did this just show me that the second install is just setup files?
If its just setup files and the two files listed in I386 are exactly the same, how do I know which one to dump?
Thank you for your help.
