Hi there,
I have the same problem that I've posted earlier. It all started with a so called tech providing with a driver for my sound card that was for Win 3.1 instead of Win 98. After installing the wrong driver, the computer would boot to the green background (no task bar) and then I would get this little message saying that msgsrv32 has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. At that point it would all just hang and I'd have to press the reset button. I can boot up into safe mode and run scandisk etc. to no avail. I tried deleting all pertinent files for that wrong driver (I hope I got them all). In device manager there was an entry under other which had a multimdia audio device and I deleted that as well. The msgsrv32 file is in the Windows/system directory. I got a driver for Win 98 and let Winzip install it. I assume it did so corectly. Now I can boot to the green background without the msgsrv32 message, but that's as far as she goes. I tried re-booting several times and I either get as far as the green background or a fatal exception blue screen. Can anybody offer some suggestions.
Brian

It would be easier just to run the windows setup again. Don't format or anything just reun the setup again. This will lay down a new set of system files fixing any corrupt ones.

When you shut down or restart your Windows 98-based or Windows 95-based computer, you may receive one of the following error messages, and your computer may stop responding (hang):

MSGSRV32.EXE caused a general protection fault in module CM8330SB.DRV

EXPLORER caused a general protection fault in module CM8330SB.DRV

MSGSRV32.EXE: An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click Close. You will lose information you entered since your last save.

Iexplore caused an general protection fault in module cm8330.drv

CAUSE
This issue can occur if your computer uses a sound card or a modem that is based on the C-Media CMI8330 sound chip. This sound chip is used as the basis for several sound cards, and is also used with some modems.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your sound card or modem to inquire about the availability of an updated driver for your sound card or modem.

NOTE: If you are unable to contact the manufacturer of your sound card, you can try to use the C-Media Windows 98 sound card driver version 4.10.00.0152 or later. This driver is available on the following C-Media Web site:
