do the following:

download vb6 runtime,
extract to a temp. directory,
boot to dos prompt and copy at least oleaut32.dll to windows\system directory.
restart, ..yeah!

I've got a very similar problem on a Win XP system. When installing InterVideo's WinDVD and WinDVR, I get the message "Setup failed to run installation: The remote procedure call failed."

Any chance this could be solved the same way?

By replacing my oleaut32.dll with an older version I was able to fix the "Incompatible version of the rpc stub" problem and many other problems. My Norton Antivirus live update used to give an error message saying "No product found on this machine to update" and my IE had trouble opening new browser windows. I found an older version of oleaut32.dll in the MDAC_IE5.CAB file in my Windows Updates directory. If you start yr PC in MS Dos mode and replace yr dll file with this older version dated 03/08/1999 then that would fix all problem. Make sure you first make a backup of yr existing file before replacing it.

I was having the same problem with installing my Logitech Trackman and Matrox G450 Video card. the Solution in msg 3 worked for me. I found a copy of vb6 runtime, extracted the oleaut32.dll and copied it to the windows/system directory (after backing up the prior copy). Restarted and it worked like a charm.

i didn't know people had the same error, i thought it would be a virus but it actually isn't! Here's a reputable way of solving the problem (I used it to fix mine):

1) download vb6 runtime files in zip format at 'href="http://www.rainfall.com/coding/kja_vb6run.zip'

2) extract the Oleaut.dll file from the zip file into a temp directory

3) copy your old Oleaut.dll file (as a backup) from c:\windows\system to another directory

4) exit to DOS and copy the file from the temp directory into c:\windows\system directory to replace the old one.

-That did it for me .. now I can actually use the 'find' function in IE! woohoo

to copy the file in dos you do the following:
(assuming that you put the new version of Oleaut32.dll in 'd:\temp')

when you are in dos prompt, you type the following to overwrite the Oleaut.dll in windows\system dir with the one in the d:\temp dir:(without the ')

'copy d:\temp\Oleaut32.dll c:\windows\system'
then say YES when it asks to overwrite

(i hope that brings you success!)

Maybe someone can explain this to me in layman's terms because I am having trouble with this RPC incompatibility thing and I tried 3 different times to download VB6 to get this file (OLEAUT32.DLL) and I do not understand what to do--SESAME STREET ME please! Instruct me like I am a novice because I am and I have no clue about how to do this stuff you are all talking about. I can not install my intel easy cam (yeah right its easy) because of an incom, patible RPC stub. I am running WIN ME--a program that should NOT have this problem but seems to have this problem. ANY help and response would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

The Problem appeared because of online Windows updates from Microsoft. As "HB" responded #15, here is another way that works to fix the problem. Thanks HB!
(1) Start System File Checker by clicking "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", "System Information".
(2) In System Information click "Tools", "System File Checker", "Extract one file from installation disk". Enter "oleaut32.dll" as filename and click Start.
If your Windows 98 CD is in drive d:, Enter "d:\win98". (or locate win98 on your harddrive - if copied previously).
Save file in: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
When it asks for Backup Folder enter C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC and Click OK.
(3) You can now restart your computer and touch-wood will be A for Away and OK.
Regards, Thys
NS: Please email me should you find this steps to be to your advantage.

I have the solution. If you have WIN98 or WIN98SE, you can use this solution. Other OS's, use this with caution.

Heres basically all you have to do:
1. Click that start button, then click run.
2. Type in SFC. Windows ME, type in msconfig.
3. In the system file checker, select restore file, then type in OLEAUT32.DLL.
4. When it asks where to restore the file from, you can select either C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS, or you can insert your installation CD and copy it off of there.
5. When it asks if you would like to backup the original file, select ok. (The directory should have the folder Helpdesk/SFC in it.)
6. Press start, or ok, or apply, or whatever. It will ask for a restart, save all work then press OK.

Thats it. It will solve most of the difficulties. It solves these problems:

Difficulties with the Installation Shield (iKernel)

Errors installing certain companies software

The find text error in Internet Explorer 5, 5.5, and 6

Illegal Errors with the file rpcrt4.dll, or Illegal Errors with the file OLEAUT32.DLL.

If you have any other operating system, consult your help file for information on using your OS's System File Checker.

NOTE: This DOES NOT erase anything nor make anything worse. I am not responsible for any errors or physical conditions resulting from this solution.

The problem appears because you either downloaded a program update from a company that updated the oleaut32.dll above your rpcrt4.dll file's version, or you got some program that did it. Answer #34 is the same as mine, answer #35. When you select to restore the file, it restores from the cabs stroed from installing windows. For some reason, peograms don't update both. Both need to be compatible with eachother or you get the error.

SECOND I donīt know if this could be of any help, but I discovered that the program that caused me the problem was SIMPLY COOL FTP V1.1. If you overwrite the files prompted, youīll get oleaut32.dll corrupted, if you skip overwriting itīll work fine and will cause no trouble.

Thanks for everybody's help and tips.
However, writer #48's response worked for me.

I have windows 95 with Internet Explorer 5.5 installed. When I tried to do a find, I got an error message that said: "ERROR 34 - Incompatible version of the RPC stub".

Cut and paste the link (below). Once it starts installing on your computer, it will tell you if you have newer files on your system.

When it asks if you want to overwrite the "OLEAUT32.DLL',say yes and say NO to all others (that's what I did). Most are system files being used by windows, anyway.
Now I can use my "find" on IE 5.5. Thanks again!

You have mail! I sent the file mcrepair.exe from MS to your posted e-mail address. I dug around a long time to find that solution. I was experiencing more problems than just the install. In addition to the RPC stub error when installing/uninstalling IE wouldn't allow any pop-up windows to open(maybe thats a good thing?) and even Nortons live update stopped working. Seems to be a dll file that gets replaced when installing IE6 and obviously theres another way to get this dll file because I have never installed IE6 and I had the symptoms. The solution is the mcrepair.exe from MS. Everything is back to normal for me now.
