Hello all,
One of my comps has Win 98 2nd Ed and Outlook Express 5. Will be building a new comp with Win XP soon. Crap on me for still using this old comp. Problem: today my inbox came up empty. All other folders is there with everything in them. I have read a lot of things in forums today. My inbox.dbx is still there hopefully full of everything at 200+MEGS. I have copied the whole folder with all the .dbx's to another spot just incase. One of the solutions seems to be to delete the inbox.mbx folder, then open OE5 and it will be magically rebuilt with all the emails restored. QUESTION, has anybody done this and it worked properly? My thinking is there will be only one email from OE5 welcoming the "new" user. How do I get all my previous emails back into the inbox? And if it has corrupted and I need to use a recovery tool, please email it to me. PayPal does not like money from South Africa. Any other suggestions would be greatly welcomed. jacoe@mweb.co.za Thanks, Jaco.

I agree with you that deleting the inbox will not restore the emails even if it does rebuild.

This is an untried shot in the dark. Make a new box from within OE, called whatever you like (let's say "Test"). Take a "copy" of your present, faulty, inbox.dbx folder and rename it to "Test.dbx". Now copy this over to replace the Test.dbx you made previously. If by chance the emails arrive in your new Test box then at least they are available and might drag over into your Inbox.

If the above should happen to work then you could, instead, drag them over to your new inbox (after deletion), assuming it rebuilds - I've never tried.

You mentioned XP and Outlook, BUT:

The machine is W98SE not XP.

The question was about Outlook Express not Outlook.

Hi all,

Derek I tried your copy and rename idea. It did not work.
Then I downloaded Eudora, installed, and imported. Still did not work. In all his time I read a lot of forums. I got a programme called MailNavigator v1.11. IT WORKS!!!! You can see everything, but to restore/save emails you need the serial number to unlock the full programme. Had to do that at USD29. It worked. All emails recovered and saved. ADN mailnav is a full email and newsgroup programme too.

Thanks again,
Jaco.
