I was given an IBM thinkpad 760ED and i decided to format. i'm having problems getting windows installed. i've copied the startup disk files to my hd, put the cd drive in, but it's trying to call from the a: drive. there is no option in the bios to boot from cd...I can't think of anything else to try. any ideas? i'd appreciate it :)

Have you tried a bootdisk yet?

Helen,

Try bootdisk.com; they have disks that will load generic CD drivers from the floppy.
Either that, or I could e-mail you an extractable file that unzips to a blank floppy. If you're interested, then let me know, and let me know what version of Windows you're trying to install.

boot with the startup disk again and type "sys c:" then enter at the a:\> prompt (copies the system files and writes the boot sector making c: bootable)

You say you have already copied the startup disk to c: then you should have cd drivers. boot from the hard drive now should allow you to find the cdrom. (if it still asks for a: drive just go ahead and put the boot disk back in)

Change to the cdrom drive by "d:" then enter (by default should be d:) and type "setup" then enter at the prompt

Even Better

sorry for the first post, but why can't you put the cd and a bootdisk in, boot go to d: or whatever the bootdisk sets your cd to and type "setup" this should work if the bootdisk has cd support (default 98 disks do)
