Actually, I am quite calm, but frustrated slightly at my inability to resolve what seems like a simple problem..
My desktop has exact file/folders/shortcuts doubles on it. Except for the IE icon, My Computer icon, and recycle bin icon, everything is x2. I've looked through MS knowledge base, asked at some other forums (fora?), and even hooked up to Expertcity.com (hah! that's oxymoronic,as I've found them to be village idiots) for screen-sharing help, all to no avail...
I'm running win98SE, cyrix166, 64Mb, 2.99Gb HD...(approx 65% free)... aside from this logically impossible anomaly, the system works well.
Should add that changes to one of the doubled items affects both.
Anyone else ever see this before?
Thanks to all humanitarian souls who deign to reply... :)

you have to delete all icons (duplicate) which must be ending with 2 . You migt have accidently created their shortcuts on desktop.

sounds like extra keys in your registry
Desktop namespaceUse regedit and look here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
Highlight the namespace key goto the registry menu and export it.
Then click on the subkey one at a time and look in the right pane to see what's up.
Right click on DUPLICATES and delete
If there is a problem click on the export to return it back to the way it was.
Or Delete the whole thing and try my reg file below

Perhaps you have TweakUI? This is a great tool, developed literally in the spare time of some Microsoft developers. The company would like to see it go away, but it's too popular. Anyway, there is a 'Icon repair' portion of TwealUI. Look for it on the web, it's everywhere, and free.

Hi,
Recommend you right click on the desktop icon and find if the "target" files are the same for each one. Messing with regedit will take you to the real wits end!
