illegal operations

Comment:
My computer is performing illegal operations in all software programs and while on the internet. When this happens it freezes the computer and all information is lost. Please advise on correcting this problem.

Suzanne / Guillermo When the Illegal operation occurs, the box that pops up has a button on it labelled "Details.." If your PC is still responding at that point, click it, so you'll know WHAT is causing the illegal operation. The line will read something like "KERNEL32.DLL caused an invalid page fault in module SHTML.DLL" -- if you notice that it's always the same module or app that is causing the illegal operation, please post it.

If you notice the same program or Kernal file causing illegal operations every time (with Internet Explorer or another program), does it mean that particular kernal program may be BAD or CORRUPTED, or does it just mean that one of your programs has overstepped its boundaries in memory?

My damn computer just got screwed by illegal operations. Anything that has to do with the internet explorer window (internet explorer, my computer, windows explorer, etc.) gets a message about "explorer caused an invalid page fault in shtml.dll (sometimes kernel32.dll) and will be shutdown" or something similar to that. It all started when I changed my video adapter from my old one to VGA so I could install my new monster fusion 2D/3D graphics card. I couldn't install it, so I changed it back to my old video adapter. Since that, everything's messed up. I can hardly play games without it kicking me out. It's fine for awhile, but after five minutes, the game closes. Maybe it has something to do with installing the Unreal Special and playing it in safe mode. I did that once, and maybe that's why it screwed everything up. The safe mode disables some stuff, but I don't know if that really affects why my computer is getting illegal operations. Can someone please help? I don't want to throw away a 4 week old Pentium II 450Mhz computer that I just bought.

Same thing happens to me. When I first got internet,(AOL) after I got a couple of viruses so I dumped my hard drive and they stopped after that. Later I switch to Compuserve, they didnt do that for a long time, they started up again. After I updated to Compuserve2000 they stopped for a long time, started back up, so I updated to compuserve20005.0 and ever since then I havent had any- but Im sure they will start backup again. Its always the internet stuff.. Makes you sick..

I HAVE GOTTEN ALOT OF ILLEGAL OPERATIONS AND HAD MY COMPUTER FREEZE OR COMPLETELY CRASH. I HAVE NOTICED THAT USING THE REGISTRY SWEEP, OR CLEAN UP HAS REALLY HELPED ALONG WITH USING WIN DOCTOR AND THEN OPTIMIZATION WIZARD. ALSO IF YOU USE THE SYSTEM FILE CHECKER, IT WILL GIVE YOU A LIST OF DLL FILES AND SUCH THAT ARE CORRUPT. THE FIRST TIME I GO THROUGH IT I JUST WRITE THEM ALL DOWN LETTING THE PROGRAM IGNORE THEM. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD MOST OF THESE FILES AND THEN GO BACK THROUGH THE FILE CHECKER, AND WHEN THE CORRUPT FILE COMES UP, YOU CAN REPLACE IT WITH THE ONE YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED. GOOD LUCK.
