Help would be greatly appreciated,
I have Norton SystemWorks 2001. I ran Norton Speed Disk with no problems just 1-2 days ago to defrag my drive, although I have no idea if that has any bearing other than that I was able to use it. Today, Norton keeps telling me that Disk Doctor is detecting problems, so I run NDD & then it says it fixed the errors, but then I get the same error message & round & round we go. I tried to run Speed Disk again, but now I get the folowing error message ...

"c:\ contains illegal long file name entries on drive c:"

then Speed Disk prompts me to first fix the errors by running NDD, which I do, then it says it fixed them, then I get the same error message that prompted this whole thing. I'm in a vicious loop right now where I can't seem to correct this problem & the error messages are frequent & annoying. I wouldn't sweat it, but I need to eventually run Speed Disk again if I want to defrag my drive when the time comes & I can't as long as this error exists. How do I fix the liong file name problem when NDD doesn't do the trick?

Any help at all or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've never had this problem before & had no errors when I last ran Speed Disk about 24 hours ago. In the meantime, I only downloaded a Microsoft Security Patch for Outlook Express & have not deleted any programs. I'm at a loss to explain the sudden disk errors.

Thanks in advance,
Wes F.

Here's my expert opinion. Get rid of Norton and just use scandisk and disk defrag that came with windows. They do the job better than any other third party program.

same to me

Norton is an excellent antivirus guy, but his system works does no more than destroy your hard disk.

It takes a lot of system resources and finally does nothing else than leave you with a wearied disk.

Thanks guys,
you were right, ScanDisk did the trick where NDD failed. I agree about SystemWorks, which is why I never upgraded beyond 2001 version. I now use it primarily for virus definitions & for letting me know when my resources are running low. I wish I just bought antivirus instead of the entire suite of programs, but I know better now & thanks to you, I also remembered I had ScanDisk on my PC all along. It's been so long since I used it, I truly forgot about the 2nd option.

Thanks again,
Wes F.

On the contrary, you NEED to upgrade from 2001 version to fix this problem. It's that NDD & Speeddisk 2001 don't like file or folder names like "version1.0005.0" because they assume the ".005.0" is the extension, like ".EXE", and of course, is too many characters. It's a bug.
