Comment: Hi. Is there anybody that has upgraded from Windows 95a to Windows 98? Did you encounter any problems with it? Since Win95a only supports 8-character filenames from CD's, are there any files on the Win 98 installation CD that are longer than that? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)When I upgraded to Win 98 from '95a , I went quite a long way round, but it was 100% trouble-free! I borrowed a Win 98 Startup Disk of a friend, and as I am in the habit of regularly formatting my C: drive to keep things sweet, I formatted the drive using WIN 98's format command prior to installation. I then ran SetUp, using the Win 95a CD (d:\win95) as proof that using the upgrade disk is allowed. Setup then ran perfectly. I don't know if this'll be of any help to you, but I thought I'd mention it all the same.

Reply: (edit)just a side note, you don't have to reinstall 95 before upgrading to 98. just run setup from the 98 upgrade CD and it will ask you to insert your 95 CD as "proof of eligibilty" for the upgrade... after it verifies that you do indeed have an earlier version, 98 setup continues normally.

Reply: (edit)Don't perform the upgrade as it will make your system crash and have numerous errors. Either install to a different directory or format your hard drive and reinstall. You will need your win95 (or win 3.11) disk(s) to verify that you owned a previous version of windows, but this is usually no problem. Trust me - don't install win98 over win95.
