If anyone still gets mediadet.exe errors saying "Failed to initialize disc detector. Mediadet.exe may be missing or an incorrect version. You will not be able to play disc-based media",and has Windows 98, try this: Use your Windows 98 system disc. Go to Cab 44, find files Winaspi.dll and Wnaspi32.dll, and extract them to c:\windows\system. Next, go to Cab 53, find file Apix.vxd, and extract it to c:\windows\system\IOSUBSYS. Re-boot your PC and it should work - it did for me. I followed Manille's (12/12/00 post)directions and it worked! The only thing is I found the Winaspi.dll & Wnaspi32.dll files in Cab 44 and the Apix.vxd file in CAB 53. Thanks Manille.
