Comment: I have this weird problem with modem, while I can log onto the service and MSN automatically logs me on. I cannot connect to any website using IE, nor does my Yahoo Messenger detects a connection. IE keeps saying that a connection cannot be detected. I checked my system in Control Panel and the modem is working. Does anyone know how to fix this problem??

Reply: (edit)hmmm an interesting one.... Which version of Windows are you using ? Ditto IE - Which version ? Did you make any changes to your system at all (regardless of how insignificant you might think they are). Finally, How long have you been experiencing this problem for ? If you could reply with answers to the above, we may be able to give you some more tips. Cheers Simon

Reply: (edit)I may be mistaken but I think I heard of a virus/trojan causing those symptoms. Anyway it wouldn't hurt to run a virus scan with up-to-date virus definitions and/or an online scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Reply: (edit)I only experienced this problem after I moved out of my apartment where I had the cable connected there. Now I moved to a new place and I no longer use the cable. I was able to connect by modem when I was on cable. However, I did not know if this is really a problem because I was able to connect regardless a while ago. I am not sure which setting I changed(or something I installed) in Window that modified the setting. The version of Window I use is Win98. The IE version I have is IE4. Hopefully this will give you some hints to solve my problem. It's has been quite frustrating. P.S. Does PCI Ethernet Controller has anything to do with this? I still have my ethernet card in the computer, should I remove it or does it even matter?

Reply: (edit)I suspect that you are right. The cable internet connections in 'Network settings' may very well be interfering with the modem. I wish I could give instructions. But never having been on cable, I can't. Eliminate all the cable entries is all I can advise.
