This afternoon I tried to open some photos of
my grandsons and a box opened that said windows could not find iexployer.exe and that it was needed to open JPEG files.Any ideas about what I need to do? can I download this from somewhere,or how do I located and replace it.I tried repair feature on ie and it won't let me do that-it states I must run setup again.

That name sounds odd (never heard of it, so it's worth double checking). It goes like this:

explorer.exe is "Windows" Explorer

iexplore.exe is "Internet" Explorer

iexplorer.exe is a "Virus"

If it's the last one then the first step is to update and run your virus scanner. You might need more specialist help.

... if it is iexplore.exe then run the IE Repair again and take note of the details. It usually refers to a wrong version file which we will need to know. We will also need your IE version number (from IE/Help/About).

In this case we can almost always avoid running setup again - I have most files that are necessary.

I'm off until tomorrow but someone might be able to continue in the meantime.

The most important thing right now is to make absolutely certain that you've spelt that iexployer.exe correctly. Until that time we don't really know what we are doing.

... don't be tempted to replace any file unaided. IE file versions are quite critical so it has to be the right one (not one from the W98SE CD)

... you can always re-associate .jpg files with some other reader (rather than IE).

Just the same, as IE Repair doesn't work you should still get it sorted. It is well integrated with Windows and you are likely to get other problems if it isn't fixed.

Glad you fixed it but there are a few things worth adding for future reference:

There's some confusion here. IE Repair and EXEfix08 are quite different things.

IE Repair can either be run from System Information (via Start Menu .... System Tools), or by going to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and double clicking the entry "Microsoft IE & Tools". This is only for IE itself. It is best that this runs through without any hiccup but I appreciate that now the problem seems to be fixed you might prefer to leave well alone.

ExeFix08 is part of a file pack (usually downloaded). The program is ExeFix08.com and you run this when a program or a number of programs fail to open, so it's not necessarily to do with IE in particular. It resets your registry entries to their correct state and is often necessary after there has been some sort of virus on the machine.

It sounds to me that it was ExeFix08 that did the trick, so you did well to sort it out. In fact I doubt it was my advice that helped fix it. If you had checked further you might have found that it was not just a problem with pictures but that several programs would have failed to work.

Nice one.

(iexployer.exe).that is what my pc is telling me is missing and needed for opening files of JPEG IMAGE.I am a novice pc user so I spend a lot of time here looking at similar problems and looking up terminology, etc to try to get thru this stuff !

Can I be devils advocate on this one and suggest an easy way to duck out of the problem and do yourself a favor at the same time.

Google around for "IrfanView" which is a first class freebie picture viewer that everyone rates on here. I promise you'll never look back (in any event it can be easily uninstalled if you prove me wrong).

Given a little time it is really easy to use, does slideshows and goodness knows what else very neatly. You will then be able to double click any picture files of your choice and they'll open just dandy. The only thing I hate is their yukky red icon which appears on files (but at least it is easy to spot).

When you get it you go to Options/Properties/Extensions and tick the picture file types you want it to take over. I'd start with .jpg and see what you think of those.

I'm sure you'll love it but if not I'll put my thinking cap on and see if I can work out why JPEG's don't come up in IE which is the MS default. I might get complicated tho.

.... if you do want to cure the original problem then your start point is to get that IE Repair to run through properly.

Fine. If you ever have to go the way of IE Repair again there is something you have to do when you get that message, such as click a details button. You then get an indication about what the problem is (usually a wrong version file).

This can almost always be fixed despite that panic message from MS that says it has to be re-installed. You just need someone with the various IE file versions - I can usually provide them.

... another thought on #14. If you are on IE61 and there happens to be a cumulative IE update still lurking on Windows Update (they still dish out the old ones) then putting this in usually updates all old version files, so IE Repair then works. None of this will affect IrfanView.

I always prefer to get shot of IE troubles but appreciate that you might prefer to leave well alone.
