try running system file checker,
start-programs-accessories-system tools-system info-tools-system file checker,
have it scan for missing or corrupted files.

Go to the Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Select MS Internet Explorer and click Add/Remove. You will see an option to repair Internet Explorer. Select it.

look for a folder named
Windows Update Setup Files in c:\windows
open that folder and double click ie6setup.exe and it should reinstall ie6,
if all else fails try getting it on cd-rom from your isp.

or post an e-mail address where I can send iexplore.exe
to you, it's 89kb

its in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
if you need to make a new shortcut to it on your desktop, just right click

Firstly, be very careful using system file checker it often get's it wrong, see this:

http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/110121.html

Secondly iexplore.exe is THE program file for Internet Explorer. Never replace this with sfc because this will give you the version that was initially loaded with W98 (not the much later IE6 version you now require).

As for your problem you may resolve it by downloading the FULL version (takes ages) rather than using Update which does not replace everything. See this:
