IE/msn messenger stopped connecting

HI
i started to have this problem all of a sudden..and dont know how to get rid of it...
after connecting to the internet my msn messenger gives an error wen trying to connect saying "We could not sign u in to msn messenger because your internet explorer browser could not connect to the internet. Please check your browsers ability to connect and then try again to connect to msn"
When i open IE and type an address it says ..cannot find server..
Netscape is able to connect on the other hand and i can access websites..i want to use IE and msn..if anyone knows wats the problem and can help..please do let me know..

is IE your default browser? Are you using a proxy?

yes IE is default browser..how do i change that?..no im not using a proxy...normal dial up....do let me know if theres a way ..i need to use msn messenger particularly..thanks
