I just did a Microsft update and now every page that i try to load with IE comes up with a page that says "The page cannot be displayed". I currently have IE v6.x and have tried using IE v5.x and it just comes up with the same page every time. I have tried changing most of the settings, running spybot, almost every thing that I can think of.
Ps. I have an adsl connection

Have you tried something else (like email or a different browser) to test and confirm that your internet connection is still working?

See if either of these help:

Whether any advice given to you has worked or not worked. Whether you are thankful or don't give a darn.....this is a forum, post back. We want to know
how it went!

I'm not really sure how adjusting any dial-up properties is going to help, seeing as how ADSL is not dial up but rather a high-speed conntection.

Good point...after searching for info, forgot you had DSL :)
Here is a page with several links to MS. I don't have time to check if DSL is among them:

Wish I could remember the detail but I recall two things, a buggy IE cumulative update some time back and some wrong later version) file that caused problems. Sorry, brain failure.
Long shots but if you have a hosts file (no extension) in c:\windows try temporarilly disabling it by adding .txt as an extension.
Also disable any pop-up killers. If my brain wakes up on the earlier stuff I'll pop back (it doesn't usually).
Derek

Nothing seems to be working(although I havent tried the host file thing yet).
I think it might have something to do with the windows update that I did.

Like I said the Hosts file was a long shot, but if you have one it's easy to try (reboot afterwards).
Some updates, but by no means all, have an uninstall. Ocassionally it is in Control Panel/Add-Remove. More often it is an .inf file with a number/letter combination ending UN.inf (strangely you right click it and chose "install" to "uninstall" the update).
With the above you need to have noted the number of the update ("usually" given). Otherwise, if you can remember anything useful about it, what it was for/date etc, I can have a stab at guessing which update it might have been.
If it was done from the normal Windows Update site this eliminates the possibility of it being an update for another OS or IE.

... more
See this rather old link:
http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/71455.htmlThere's a heck of a lot of stuff in the MS article given in the website addy at response #1.
Derek

All I really Know about it is that I posted the first message on the same day that I downloaded the update.

You could use Find to see what arrived on your computer the date you did the update. If you find an .inf file you might be onto it.
Otherwise I'm out of ideas, other than working through the stuff on that MS link that was mentioned on the other post, this one:

.... ooops, not sure why but that link was did. Another try:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q241/3/44.aspYep, that works!

If it is an update issue, this might provide some insight:

Here's a longshot:
Once when I was fixing my wife's system, I temporarily stored a system file (WSOCK32.DLL) on my desktop. That prevented IE5.5 from working while on-line. See here for details.
Hap

Prompted by Hap's thoughts I wonder if that was the file I half remembered in #6. It appears to be an original W98 file that doesn't normally get updated. In which case it is perfectly safe to try restoring it from your W98 CD, nothing lost anyway.
You just type sfc in the Run box and use the extract facility (you probably already know this). This file is OK but note for the future that sfc can get some files wrong, see here:-
http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/110121.htmlHappy to send wsock32.dll if you have lost your W98CD but accept that it is a long shot.
Derek

Wouldn't hurt to do the sfc extract and restore it from your CD just in case.
You could try IE Repair (CP/Add-Remove and click on Microsoft IE entry) but I'm none too hopeful.
It's unlikely anyone else will pass by so you may care to repost, explaining everything you've tried. Maybe someone will come along with some bright new idea.
Good luck
Derek
