In searching for this problem I came across a post from July (117807) with EXACTLY the problem I have experienced. Unfortunately there was no solution found - does anyone know if a fix was found for this?

The symptoms:- IE6 under Win 98se suddenly stopped showing gifs in pages on my local hard drive, only displaying the place marker with an x in the box. jpegs are fine and pages on the Internet are fine, it's only pages on my C: drive that are affected.

I had already tried everything suggested in the post - IE is set to show pictures, file associations are OK, I've run a repair on IE6. I've tried "Open with" on a gif file on my HDD, opening it with IE, and just get a box with an x.

I installed Netscape 7 as an alternative browser to test web pages I'm developing, and suspect this is behind it, but I can't see how. Netscape displays pages on the C:drive fine, though, while IE won't show the gifs. (Only gifs are affected, jpegs are OK).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Callan,
I'm having the same problem and no solution as well.(see post 130073)
Are you able to get the full download on occassion? For reasons unknown to me mine will suddenly load the gifs which is usually only once a day. Really confusing and has me stumped.

It only started a couple of days ago, and has consistently refused to display local gifs.

Your post, 130073, was very interesting, with some ideas I hadn't tried, but then again, you've tried them and they didn't work!

I've still got the idea that installing Netscape had something to do with it - the Java suggestion might be worth investigating, as Netscape obviously doesn't use the Microsoft JVM, but then why should that affect a gif image?

Right-clicking on the image placeholder gives a path but no image information, so it's something to do with finding the file, not merely displaying it. The path starts file///c:/ so maybe it's something to do with a drive letter in the URL. (I'm clutching at straws here...). But why just gifs and not jpegs?

Still confused, but at least I'm not alone!

I had this problem last week but fortunately just doing a repair on ie did the trick. I did run accross this site: Tek-Tips where lots of folks experienced the same loss of gifs/jpgs and offered multiple solutions.Does not appear to be 'one size fits all".

Hope this helps...............ck

Callan,
I had the problem prior to Netscape. I tried an install of Netscape to see if made a difference, however, it did not.
Thanks CK for the site will do some research there. I tried the I.E. repair to no avail.

Thanks CK - I'm not sure if that helps or makes me more depressed, looking at all the suggestions which have been tried and failed! (Especially when one of the posts points out yet another forum with a post 219 entries long on this subject)!

I'll give some of them a try, though.

OK guys, here goes - double-checking the associations, I went into the file types and checked that there was an entry for gifs under Paint Shop Pro. The first entry was for jpeg, so I checked the "Content Type (MIME)" list, scrolled to gif and OKd. Bingo! Gifs again displayed, even on local pages. But.... (wait for it).... jpegs stopped working! Did the same procedure for jpegs and all now seems to work.

Whether it will still work tomorrow remains to be seen. Judging by the posts I've looked at so far, it's an inconsisent but fairly widespread problem.

Anyway, thanks for your help, both. It's sorted for just now, but I've got the feeling I haven't heard the last of this....

Just for the record, the gifs didn't display again this morning. Went into file types, and under Paint Shop Pro, there was no entry in the Content type (MIME) for gifs. Added it again and they worked.

Hummm. So the association will not stay applied.
-When you opt for Paint Shop Pro for gif's are you clicking 'apply' or 'OK'? (Just asking.) Another way is to find a (Gif) picture that you have saved on your hard drive, left click once, hold the shift key and right click at the same time. Choose 'open with', select the program, check the box that says 'always open with' then click 'OK'.
-Some other program may want the association but windows is told another. Ergo conflict. Check start up programs. Look at the icons on the taskbar on the right, look under 'run>msconfig>startup' and peruse the startup list. Look for any other graphics program that is present. If so, fire up that program and under preferences or something similar, see if there is file association. (Real player is a real pain in this respect. It's like AOL, wants to take over everything.) If in doubt about listings in msconfig, here is a good site that has a comprehensive list:
pacs-portal

(It is a long list so it may take a while to d/l the page, but it is worth it.)
Just a few thoughts, I hope it leads you to the answer. I have a feeling you are almost there...

Hi CK,

I've tried most of these, but the settings don't stay put. I've now got a registry file to reinstall the gif association under the MIME setting, but still have to go into the file type and OK to confirm it, then do the same to get jpegs to work, as the default extension for them changes to .jpe. In both cases, though, I just click OK - the "apply" button stays greyed out, even though I've made changes.

I agree about Real Player - it's a b****** to get rid of from the startup! The latest version loaded with Netscape when I loaded that. I think I've finally disabled it from grabbing anything, so I'll see what happens. Why the association of a gif with Paint Shop should help it display in IE, though, is still beyond me, especially as Netscape is OK. At least I can fix the problems, even if it's a hassle, until I can find a permanent solution.

Thanks for your help.

Hi everybody,
After struggling for days trying to find a solution to get the gifs and jpgs showing up in IE6, after reading all kind of forums about this problem and applying dozen of tricks, I tried a stupid thing that finaly solved the problem : enable the proxy server. I am using Ad-Aware, Zona Alarm on a Win2K with IE6.
Just enable and set your proxy settings and the images should appear. I hope I helped someone with the same case as me.

IE6="if you can't convince, confuse"
