Hi,

Further to message 133694 which I thought would solve the problem. It didn't. IE6 partially opens a new window with just the frame visible. Copying & pasting a URL into the address bar makes it work, else nothing happens.

I have had this problem for weeks and it's driving me nuts! Following the instructions in Msg 133694, I ran regsvr /i urlmon.dll with and without the /i. The problem remains although I had confirmation that urlmon was registered.

SOmeone else suggested that reverting to IE 5.5 might solve the problem. I would prefer not to do this.

Anyone have any ideas?

Roger.

Did you download IE 6 or IE 6 Service Pack 1?

I noticed in the article that the problem was corrected with Service Pack 1.

Are you running any type of POP-UP/AD stopper program?

Is this only when you right click on a link and select Open in New Window or will links set to open in a not work also?

Here is a link set to Open in a New Window.

Hi Mesich,

Thanks for coming back to me. In answer to your questions:
1. Yes, I have installed both IE6 & SP1
2. No, no pop-up/Ad stoppers
3. Right Click, new window link, and Shift/Click all create empty windows.

Here is the history of events:

1. Tried registering URLMON - registered, but no better.
2. Ran SFC to check system files and restored latest files except for vbscript, mshtml. No better.
3. Re-installed Win98 from Cabs - window open problem solved but OE started crashing on create message, Windows Update wont download (recent problem pre-dating this exercise), and all text entry - passwords etc- stopped working so couldn't sign-on to hotmail or reply to your message.
4. Tried to re-install IE6 from Add/Remove programs - gave me a repair option. Tried it, but got message saying a re-install was necessary.
5. Re-installed IE6 from hard disk. OE problem resolved and text entry now work. New window reverted to fail state - no joy. Windows Update still wont download - cancelling gives a dialog box asking me to report the problem to MS (auto) and then closes IE6.

This is where I was before I tried changing things, so it's some progress! Back to square one. Maybe a total re-install of Win98SE and IE6 (from a cd) are necessary.

What do you reckon?

Regards,

Roger.

Hi Rodger,

There are 4 other library files that are depended upon when "Opening in a New Window".
They must also be properly registered.

Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll

Register those files also.

regsrv32 Shdocvw.dll
regsrv32 Msjava.dll
regsrv32 Mshtml.dll
regsrv32 Browseui.dll

Try renaming OLEAUT32.dll to OLEAUT32.old and then extract OLEAUT32.dll from your Win98 disk.

If this does not fix the problem or causes more problems you can always delete the new file and rename ODEAUT32.old back to .dll

Don't know if this worked for you or not Roger, but it did for me! Perfectly! Also, it fixed my problem with V4 Update which now runs as well (yes, interestingly both of us where having that problem in common as well!).

Thanks for the fix!

Hi Mesich & Kkerns,

Thanks for you comments.

Re: restoring and registering the dlls I have a problem! I tried extracting oleaut32 from the win disk and sfc couldn't find it. Neither could Find. I browsed the disk and found the file with an extension of dl_ and extracted it. But the extension remained as dl_.

Is there a source of dlls on the net where I can get the latest (and older) dlls? Also, having checked all my files with sfc (it took hours) I have found loads of installed dlls with version numbers older than previous versions. I think this is a result of installing software which comes packaged with dlls which were current at the time of packaging but are now old. This mix of old and new versions could be the cause of my problems. Is there ANY way of updating my system to the latest level, and will this affect the older programs?

Thanks for your help guys, it's greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Roger.
