IE6 Open New Window not working

Comment:

Right clicking a link & selecting "Open In New Window" opens a blank page, no URL in the Address bar (and of course nothing on the page). Maybe related, but the Windows Updates will not download. The Dialog Box freezes.

Make sure your windows Timezone and date settings are correct. I heard that Windows Updates might not like it if it's not the right settings.

Try a repair for IE6. Go to Add/Remove and choose Internet Explorer and then choose the Repair option. Before you do that look at this MS Site and see if it fixes your problem. It's not exactly the same but similar.

Kevin.

Hello everyone,

I have seen this problems many times and found it is normally due to an incorrect versison of oleaut32.dll that got installed by an update or other third party software.

Post back with your version of oleaut32.dll.

It is located in the C:\Windows\System folder.

Right click on it and select Properties.

Select the Version tab at the top.

Best Regards,
Mesich

My oleaut32.dll version is 3.50.5014.0

There is also an older file named oleaut32.dl_ which has version 2.30.4261

Thanks for the help. Let me know what you think.

Hi David and everyone,

That is your problem, the version you have is for WinXP and IE 6.

The version you need is 2.40.4518.0

I learned recently from FZWG that you can replace the file by running the mcrepair patch.

MCREPAIR.EXE

Hi Mesich, David, hi everyone,

Another solution that worked for me (after having upgraded to Internet Explorer 6), is to just copy OLEAUT32.DLL v.2.40.4518 from another system!

Hi Gérard, and everyone,

I bet I have mailed that file to a several dozen different people. Just replacing the oleaut32.dll will do the trick as you stated.

Installing MCREPAIR.exe will also replace it along with a couple of others that I cannot remember off the top of my head. The fix was not intented for those with a problem in Internet Explorer but for Microsoft Money.

Running the MCREPAIR.exe is usually easier for most as it will replace the file from a Windows enviroment. If one decides to replace the file manually they will have to do so from DOS. This is the only reason I have started recommending the MCREPAIR.

Good Day!

Hi Mesich, David, Marooma, Kevin, hi everyone,

You are quite right Mesich! easier to fix it from Windows with MCREPAIR... but how does it manage to retrieve the right version of the .DLL file? is there an Internet access? is it a compacted pack of several files (with OLEAUT32.DLL is them)?

Have a good day,

Hi Mesich, hi everyone,

I answer my own question! LOL

... foolish behavior from me (I don't advise anyone to do so)!
I launched MCREPAIR.exe even though I didn't have anything wrong with oleaut32.dll...
... I do hope I won't get troubles! ;-)
- MCREPAIR.exe patch is designed for IE 4.0 and more
- MCREPAIR.exe, 466 KB, is a compressed .exe file that generates a 8-file-'IXP000.TMP'-folder in C:\Windows\Temp that is correctly deleted at the end
- it, apparently, didn't need to go to the Internet to download any file (I'm not sure as I forgot to end my connection)
- it is able to repair:
--- asycfilt.dll v.2.40.4515 dated March 3, 2000
--- oleaut32.dll v.2.40.4515 dated March 3, 2000
--- olepro32.dll v.5.0.4515 dated March 3, 2000
--- stdole2.dll v.2.40.4515 dated March 3, 2000
(all of these files in C:\Windows\System)

Hi Gérard, and everyone,

Against your very good advise, I also launched the MCREPAIR.EXE. I am on a machine running WinXP with IE6 right now and the file versions would be incorrect.

I was prompted that the current file was newer than the existing file and would I like to overwrite it. I selected No for each of the four files.

I only recommend those that need the oleaut32.dll version 2.40.4515 due to problems with opening in a new window run the MCREPAIR.exe. I would also suggest that they say No to the other files and only overwrite the oleaut32.dll.

The version 2.40.4515 is for Win98 with IE6. From what I have seen the only problem is with that setup.

I created a page sometime back as this seems to be a problem for many Win98 users after upgrading to OE6.

Open in new window doesn't work

I suppose I should add a download for the oleaut32.dll and mention the MCREPAIR.exe on the page.

Gérard, was you prompted to overwrite your current versions?

It has been a while since I tried it on a Win98 machine and from what I remember I received no prompts.

Good Day!
Mesich

Yes, I was prompted to overwrite each of the 4 files on my current Ws98SE/IE6.0 SP1 system (but mine were also newer... we are perhaps prompted only when versions are newer).

>I would also suggest that they say No to

As a matter of fact, we can say that a safe behavior is to always answer NO when prompted to overwrite a newer file!
(the only exception is when we want to re-install Windows on top of an existing one... but this is another subject).

Many, many thanks to Gérard and mesich. I was able to get a useable version of oleaut32.dll which worked not only to open new windows but finally allowed me to download Windows updates (there were 13 critical updates!)which previously wouldn't work.

Thanks to all who responded and cured my problem. Happy days. David

David,

Glad to see everything is up and running, even better than expected. Thank you very much for posting back with the results, doing such will surely help others in the future.

Gérard,

I hope you found my post interesting!

I not only found it interesting but extremely informative. Your vast knowledge never seizes to amaze me.

I think the next page I create on mesich.com will be about the MCREPAIR.
I will try and get to that this evening with credit towards yourself and to David for #11, along with FZWG for making me aware of it.

I will email you for a look-over before publishing it.

Good Day!

Hi Mesich, David, hi everyone,

Mesich, thanks a lot for your so kind words! I didn't do much as I didn't even know about MCrepair before July 28!
Yes, a page about MCrepair on your site is a precious gift to your visitors as OLEAUT32.DLL seems that important (and probably the other 3 files as well).

I got the XP version of OLEAUT32.DLL (v.3.50.5014.0) when I upgraded to IE 6 SP1 a month ago though my system was Ws98SE! Sometimes, installer seems to make mistakes!
I wonder whether MCrepair should not be run as a first try for many (maybe any) troubles regarding Internet Explorer (I think mcrepair controls file versions correctly and doesn't cause damage!).

Hi Gérard, and everyone,

I think running the MCREPAIR.exe is a good idea if they are running Win98 and IE6.

The version that comes with Win98SE and IE5 is 2.40.4275.1 and may causes issues with it.

Speaking of good fixes for Internet Explorer here is one I learned about from Tufenuf.

LSPFIX

This one repairs the Winsock 2 settings that may be damaged after removing spyware.

I have seen Tufenuf recommend this several times with positive results.

Mesich

Hi Mesich, hi everyone,

Thanks a lot! I saw several posts by Tufenuf about LSP-fix!
I even downloaded and ran it on my system, but no fix applied! ;-)

I tried to search around lspfix... I don't know yet but maybe some problem regarding a RPCSS error message related on cexx forum at http://boards.cexx.org/general/messages/992.html?board=general...
That lead me back to Computing.Net to a very long thread living from February 1999 (last century) to February 2001 and 93 posts! nobody I know! have a look at post #53! if you're interested, posts #93 asked a question and Maxine Balliet is still waiting! Hi Mesich, hi everyone,

I had not understood cexx explanations regarding LSP ( http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm ).
Here are some lines I understood better ( http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~support/web/spyware.html ):
"Some spyware programs integrate themselves into Windows networking, forcing all internet traffic on your computer to be directed through the spyware program. If the spyware is improperly removed, there will be a gap in the path between your computer and the internet."

The explaination is much more down to earth and easier to understand.

I hope Maxine has corrected the problem as it's been 2 years now. :~)

Here is a very recent thread in which Tufenuf speaks of LSPFIX. Also interesting in the thread is winsockfix.zip described by Starwaves.

Thanks again for all the info Gérard.

Hi Mesich, hi everyone,

Thanks for the link to Ken1606's "Desperate to fix IE problem" (Tufenuf and starwaves)... I had noticed it and recorded in "My Computing.Net" to have a look on it! ;-) yes, very interesting!

Did you hear about RPCSS.exe being a program designed to Microsoft's spy projects? is it still right?
I have RPCSS.exe on both comps I currently have in front of me... one of them has EnableRemoteConnect set to 'Y' but I haven't noticed connection attempts!

Hi Gérard, Hi everyone,

Almost everything I have read on the internet links back to here.

Here is something I found interesting in the link.

Knowing all of this, some might be wondering about the possibilities of spyware or other Trojan horses using RPC to perform tasks for their nefarious masters. While this is certainly a possibility, it is pretty unlikely for two reasons. First, as I mentioned before, RPC is a UNIX form of interprocess communication and is really only used by Windows NT programmers. As a result, the average spyware author is probably unaware of how to use it or unaware of how to use it properly.
Second, RPC is a very noisy protocol that uses a lot of bandwidth. The above-average Trojan horse authors will not use RPC for this very reason, as a well-trained eye watching a network monitor can easily spot RPC traffic and such traffic is easily deciphered. In addition, many firewalls block RPC traffic anyway, just in case you happen to be running UNIX behind the firewall.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi Mesich, hi everyone,

Thank you for reminding me of this page!
This excellent page is a general one about RPC in many OS's from Unix to NT, 2K & XP to 9x...

Though Patrick Chipman stated RPCSS.exe should not be deleted, even with Ws9x, (Patrick wrote RPC was practically not used by Ws9x), this morning, I read oodles of lines about RPCSS to be deleted with Ws9x! along with its partner MDM.exe!

-> http://www.cexx.org/rpcss.htm does describe RPCSS as a "malware", a "spy" inserted by MicroSoft with some software (Visual Studio, Visual Basic, C++, etc.) they want to have a look on! opening 135 ports, causing unwanted Internet connections, instability and security problems (refering to Computing.Net http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/3943.html)

-> Microsoft suggests that users can safely remove mdm.exe without ill effects (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q221/4/38.asp)

-> http://accs-net.com/smallfish/dcom.htm
