For WIN 98,1st ed:

Should I install Internet Explorer 6 in place of my current IE5.00?

Interested in Recommendations for or against.

Another question:
IE5.01 & IE5.05 are no longer available at Microsoft--are they available somewhere else?

You can still get IE 5.5 SP2 here:

/ftp.uq.edu.au/mirror/microsoft/ie/5.01sp2/win9x/ie501sp2.exe

Which is the last full update of IE5

Note however it is a 79.5MB Download!

P.S.

Last full update of 5.01 NOT 5.5

Sorry!

IE6 is ok with Windows 98 first edition as long as you get the SP1 and Internet tools version. I read for quite awhile people were having trouble with IE6 when it first came out. After SP1 was released I haven't read much about troubles. I've been using IE6 for several months now with no problems. I would recommend you get some more memory for your machine. 64K is kind of low for today's software. Atleast 128k if not 256K would help everything run better.

Roark,

I guess your ram is 64MB, (u cant live on a 64k, not even for DOS ! )

Browers are a memory hog. If I were to be you, I'd stick to IE 5 or use Opera (non java), ..opera...my fav.

I am an internet addict and am typing this on IE 5, (default on win2k) and I am more than satisfied with the features it has.

I tried IE 6 on my old P3 550 Mhz / 64 MB ram and browsing was slower than it was with the default IE 5.

I have both IE5.5 and IE6 on different computers running Win98SE. Both work about the same as far as I can tell.

I don't use IE6 so I can't speak from personal experience, but there's been threads on this site about problems associated with IE6 upgrades.

There's a few sites to download IE5.5 but as Mike C points out, the files are huge.

The AOL disks they sent out by the billions had a 5.5 upgrade on them. It was about an 8 meg file but would only work for ME. On the last disk I looked at the upgrade file was about 15 meg. I ran that file and it installed 5.5 just fine on 98.

You might check those old disks if you kept them to see what's on them. Or if you're interested, I can burn the file to a cd and send it to you.

my advice always the same to all.. if it aint broke dont fix it. likewise for msoffice97 (&many ohters), i'm still using 97! y bothered to get office2k or xp wen i'm totally ok with 97? i dont need the new features in the newer versions (heck i dont even kno wat's new) so there's no need. and for this reason (using older apps version juz enuf to cover ur needs) my PIII runs apps faster than my fren's P4.
