IE5.x index.dat file
ok guys someone must be able to tell me how to remove this secret .dat file....it's driving me nuts.

You know the one that holds all your internet URL, cache and cookie details...the one that you thought you had deleted by emptying the history, cache and cookie files....it seems to be *kevlar* coated 'cos I've tried everything I can think of to get rid of it or delete it's contents.

Pleeeeeease help!!!!

you have to delete it in DOS or before explorer loads.
but windows will have to recreate it.
If you have deleted everything else I'd suggest deleting the whole folder
So windows will recreate the whole thing.

You can delete it only in DOS-Modus (not DOS-BOX).

On the prompt in the right directory (when "dir" displays the INDEX.DAT), type "del index.dat".

Then restart windows. That's it.

Put the following in your autoexec.bat:

deltree/y C:\Windows\Cookies
deltree/y C:\Windows\Tempor~1

If you don't have an autoexec.bat, create one in your root directory.

Because they are part of the windows architecture, like system.dat, user.dat, win386.swp, etc, etc, and they are hidden system files so people don't screw around with them and F*** up windows.
They aren't "secret". And they aren't collecting information to send back to MS!!!

Well, "Hmmm" above is only half right (if that). It may be part of the architecture, but it didn't HAVE to be, except by the Bill Gates "integration" obsession at MS. This of course, NOT to make it easier for the end-user (gimme a break), but to elbow out competitors (why they lost at trial, even after their "edited and false" evidence). As for not sending information back, duh!, can you think of any other use for cookies???

It may not HAVE to be, but it certainly IS.

As for the DUH!, there was no talk about cookies here, which can only be read by the originating site anyways, the thread is about the INDEX.dat file in the browser cache. WHICH contains more than just reference info to cookies.
AND, if you are worried about them, change your security settings, get a cookie blocker, etc. etc.

Hmmm: (no comment, although the original post DID concern cookies)

Well, sort of.
It is talking about the Index.dat file which "holds all your internet URL, cache and cookie details..."
NOT the cookies themselves.

Hmmm: NONE of your comments are relevant help to the original post request. GoodBye! Replies 1 thru 5 WERE helpful.

It was actually reply 5 that started the rest of this.
"but I can't help wondering why Ms have inbuilt these dat files that (a) you don't have access to and (b) can't delete!"

And I'm sorry your paranoia and MS rant got in the way of the facts.
