I "accidentally" tried to install an XP program into my Win98Se system. After restoring most of the Dll's back to normal, I still have one problem I can't resolve with IE5.5 (SP2). I can't access any secure sites (https). I just get the message that the page can't be accessed. I have re-installed Win98Se and IE5.5 and verified all of my security settings are correct under tools/options/advanced. I suspect there are some Dll's that I have missed. My questions are:
1) What Dll's handle the SSL access
2) Is there a way to force IE5 to install ALL of the dll's it needs. (IE5 won't install its DLL's over newer DLL's).
Thanks.

How about uninstalling IE5.5 and reinstalling it?

What is your cipher strength?
To find out:
Open IE.
Go to help>>about internet Explorer.
Read the line Cipher Strength. You can also go to Fortify.net and perform the SSL check. It will tell you what your cipher strength is also.
If it is not 128bit:
Cipher Strength Appears as 0-Bit in Internet Explorer (Q261328)
That article has the 3 DLL's listed that handle encryption. And the instructions for reinstalling them.

I have tried all of these great suggestions, except none of them worked! My Cipher strength is 128-bit, I am using SP2, and I have uninstalled/reinstalled a few times. Apparently IE5 does not write over DLL's that are newer than the ones in its own cab files. It would be nice to be able to force Ie to re-install ALL the DLL's it needs.
Anyway, I solved the problem finally when the Wintrust.dll file was replaced.

That's okay...I can't get IE6 to go to secure sites either. I have tried everything you have tried. Netscape does not have this problem.
