Also possibly check your browser security and firewall settings, you may be holding back some identification the site requires for verification. You should allow cookies (browser security options) plus HTTP_REFERER and HTTP_ADDRESS header data (firewall anonymisation settings).

What is your cipher strength? The sites may have increased it to 128 bits.

Help --> About Internet Explorer

You may need an upgrade.

Internet Explorer has been at 128 bit since 5.01, it was offered as an update for that version, then included with version 5.5 onwards as part of the software.

i am having the same trouble as dwight i also ran spybot as well as ad-aware 6.0 and an upto date virus scan with no success even though i had the latest version of ie and in the about box it showed 128bit cipher strength i then tried Renaming the Schannel.dll, Rsabase.dll, and Rsaenh.dll files (in the windows system folder)by using the .old extension. then reinstalled ie 6.0 an still having the same trouble not able to access secure websites msn,microsoft etc. i also checked and verified that the settings in the various tabs in internet options were also correct. i also checked on this site an under another subject called "Can't log in to some secure sites" Eric Moritz is also having the same trouble? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you have a router, reset it. Everything will work just fine after that :)

Doc: I don't have a router but tried accessing secure site www.billing.microsoft.com {which is also the site tech help uses to check if you can access secure sites) without using my firewall and still had the same problem. I then used the regsvr32 command which registers the dll files registering the dlls that i knew was needed to access secure websites well it worked partially when I tried registering the Advapi32.dll I received the following message - (DllRegisterServer may not be exported, or a corrupt version of Advapi32.dll may be in memory. Consider using PView to detect and remove it.}- i tried again to access the site and couldn't BUT when I did the search on billing.microsoft and then clicked on the link on the search page i was able to access the secure site?? I also reread Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 261328 about Cipher Strength and noticed that Advapi32.dll requires version 4.90.0.3000 or greater I have version 4.80.1675 do you know where i can get the latest version?

Go to www.microsoft.com click on downloads under the section "most popular downloads"
you will see "Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB831167)" click on that and you will see the msg "If you've recently had trouble logging on to Web sites or completing Internet transactions - or if you have started seeing the message "HTTP 500 internal server error" when trying to visit secure Web sites - then you might need this update.". I tried it and although it didn't solve my problem maybe it will yours, hope this helps. But I have noticed I can access secure sites through a search page like google by clicking on the link now, but still can't access the site by typing the address in the address bar itself?

I am having the same problem with (2) computers, cannot access secure sites and a message stating that my clock may be set wrong. Anyone have any suggestions at this point?

My Win98 machine started having this problem yesterday. I'm running the latest IE and I've changed nothing for quite a while, so this is quite unexpected and I'm not sure what's going on.

I can't connect to secure sites with Mozilla, either. I can connect with a different machine, so it's not RoadRunner.

I've completely removed my Norton firewall. I've double checked all my IE settings (MED security, ssl 2.0/3.0 enabled).
