Hi all, anyone had this prob? Some web site links don't come thru on this machine but the same links DO on others on my home network (W2k & XP Home). Tried to repair IE & gave me message that it couldn't, so I went for full re-install. This has made no difference. Went to Win Update & tried to download various updates, clicked on install & it did nothing. When I cancel download the dreaded 'Illegal Operation' message comes up & IE closes. The probs with Win Updates also occured before I re-installed IE. Please, any ideas??

Some URL's can be blocked by entries in the HOSTS file.

Reinstalling ie must include manually checking each and every box that was installed before, otherwise you just wasted your time and ie was NOT reinstalled. Did you double check that ie CAN be repaired now? Don't consider yourself done with ie problems until the repair will run to completion with no errors.

WU problems may be broken script package, get that fixed with the 5.6 Windows Scripting Host Package for 98. Any joy?

Thanx to you both for info. Caza, will check HOSTS file later today as it looks quite involved. Melee5, have installed & ran script host package but unfortunately didnt solve prob. Can't go for repair cos IE isn't listed in add/remove progs for some reason!! If it helps the error that comes up when I close WU is an invalid page fault in module RPCRT4.DLL at 016f:7fbd0894. Thanx again

Caza, have checked HOSTS files in c:\windows & there aren't any at all! No folder, nothing!! Not sure if thats good or bad. Have downloaded & unzipped your HOSTS link but not sure if I should put it in windows folder as instructed. What do you think?

Hi melee5, caza, as an addition to try & rectify prob I went to MSKB, found corresponding page fault article & they said was an incorrect or mismatched Schannel.dll file. Followed their instructions but has made no difference. What is going on here? I am considering scanreg/restore to go back before I had probs.

If you don't have a HOSTS file, then it can't be the problem. You probably shouldn't install one until you have a solution for the problem. It would only add to the confusion. It was the only thing I could think of that would cause some web pages to be blocked while others will display. If Internet Explorer won't display any web pages I would suspect a WINSOCK problem.

ie repair is also available in System Information app via start menu. It's the first item in the Tools drop down menu. You may have to install System Information from Add/Remove Programs.

But I would do an ie reinstall again anyway - do check the boxes, it is a requirement despite a misleading prompt and articles to the contrary.

You need to upgrade Internet Explorer to version 6.0.

Hi caza, melee5, I've reinstalled IE again, updated to version6 but still cant download updates from WU site. Have cleaned the system best I can using Spyware scanners, defragging, removing recent progs I thought may be causing a prob all to no avail. Did think about restoring but (a)the feature isn't available on the system for some reason! & (b)Its been longer than 5 days since prob began. Not being able to update from WU is giving me more cause for concern than anything. I've also updated Java & have WINSOCK version 2. Any ideas??????

See if you can download Cumulative Patch 810847 and Security Update 811630 for Internet Explorer.

I'm glad it helped. The troubleshooter seems to consider every possibility. Can you tell us specifically what it was that fixed the problem? Did you have to re-register some .dll files, or change the association of the .JS file type?

Had to replace 4 .dll files in the end. Troubleshooter said it was known prob, didnt know why it happens but gave 3 solutions to try. Didnt realise their help page were so in depth but happy they are.
Thanx again caza.

Thankyou. I've seen other cases with this same problem. Now I can be more specific about the fix.
