many times when i open internet explorer my homepage is changed to http://default-homepage-network.com/start.cgi?c001

this is the most annoying thing ever.
i went in my router setup and blocked that url and added it to the restricted site list in internet options.

now when my homepage is changed to that it wont show anything because its blocked, but how can i make my homepage not change to this?

by the way...im pretty sure its a pop up ad on buddypic.com that is doing it, but i could be wrong

Download and use AdAware.

In addition to AdAware, download and run Spybot Search and Destroy: SS&D

These two programs will help you get rid of a number of parasites and other dubious entries lurking in your PC.

After running the two utilities above, download and run HijackThis!: HT!

Return and post the results of your HijackThis! log to identify any other entries in need of attention or removal.

Eric,

Just a small clarification...

have u checked in Tools>Internet Options>..

Is the Address of Home Page is changeable or greyed out?

If greyed out then you need to do some corrections in registry.

Let me know.

the hompage is not grayed out..I can change it, I've been changing it back but i keep getting that annoying hompage from a pop up. I will download a spyware program if I have to, but id rather not. People have told me that some of them actually have adware of their own built in causing a bigger annoyance. Also they are a pain becuase if you want to have multiple instances of internet explorer you need to push certain buttons to allow ie to open since the programs will think another ie instance is a pop up. Im already using adaware but it isn't live, I can only get rid of the adware once its already on my system.

If I can't resolve the problem without downloading additional software which is the best program to download: Spybot Search and Destroy, HijackThis, or spywareblaster?

Look at response #2.

Don't know where you are getting your info from, but SS&D and HijackThis! are two of the best programs available, and will not clutter your PC with more dubious code.

To get rid of parasites (spyware/malware, foistware, etc.) already on the PC, use SS&D and HT!.

To prevent spyware from being installed, one could use SpywareBlaster.

I think it's rather rude for someone to come in and ask for help and then not accept any of it when they're all suggesting the same things.

I could understand if everyone was saying something entirely different - or if you were positive that you knew more than most the people who'd posted . . . Because I have seen many instances of situations such as those in all the different forums.

However, what everyone is suggesting to you is perfectly legitimate . . . I have not used HijackThis, so I can't say anything for or against it, but I CAN give my piece on AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy. I personally LOVE Spybot S&D, AdAware is OK but more for the intermediate or novice user who just needs something they can click click click and fix all.

Lastly, when you said, "Also they are a pain becuase if you want to have multiple instances of internet explorer you need to push certain buttons to allow ie to open since the programs will think another ie instance is a pop up." - you are confusing Adware/Spyware removal programs with pop-up stoppers. AdAware and Spybot S&D are NOT pop-up stoppers. They can help to limit popups that are caused by spyware on your computer, but they are not pop-up stoppers in the typical sense.

Besides, even with pop-up stoppers, you usually just hold "CTRL" and *voila* you can see pop-ups again.

Spyware Blaster (already mentioned) is also fine but simply "protects you" from malware. It doesn't remove malware or run in the background, so you still need to clear out the nasties before installing Spyware Blaster.

I agree that the malware finders/removers mentioned are spyware free. They should not interfere with anything but even if they did you could always uninstall them once they have done their job. Better than being stuck with your problem or spending many happy hours in the registry and/or trying to find rogue files.

I ran into the same problem you did Eric and found a nifty website that tells you how to clean it. It also provides a tool call CWS Shredder, which stripped out this malware and gave me back my IE.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

The tool can be found at this website:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

I hope you have the same results I did.

CWShredder is fine but it only relates to a specific malware. If eric has that particular one then it will do the trick.

The other software mentioned is more generalised.

Thanks for popping back, hope it stays good.

Consider Spyware Blaster too - "in theory" it should make SpyBot (and Ad-Aware) redundant because it prevents the nasties getting through in the first place.

Post your HijackThis! log (you'd do better if you started your own post) or check out to see if you have the following entry:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default-homepage-network.com/start.cgi?c001

Choose 'Fix checked', and remove.

Close all IE windows and while offline reset home page in IE Tools>Internet Options.

Next, in the Security tab enter the following to 'restricted':

default-homepage-network.com

Clear temporary Internet files, cookies, and history. Reboot.
