When i click on the blue e on the desktop. I get a box saying program not found. it has a box with location of ieexploer.exe. I have tried to repair ie and tried to reinstall but no luck. When i try to reinstall i get a message that there is a newer version. This system was infected with many many viruses. AVG found a virus on the boot up scanner. All is clean as far as AVG knows. I mean i have scanned more and no more infections. Is there anyway to fix this problem other than to reformat? I also got a message while system was infected a white box saying windows needed to be reinstalled. I booted up with 98 boot disk and reinstalled 98 from the Win98 folder on the drive. I really would like to fix this without reformatting.
Bryco, Thanks for the reply. What doese the above comment mean? AVG is a good program. AVG was installed AFTER infections. Its my kids computer and it was acting up so i installed AVG and it found some viruses on the boot scanner.
DAVEINCAPS, Thanks for the reply, I managed to reinstall ie from the folder it reinstalled and now IE will open. Not sure why it would not reinstall before.
...this coming from someone who mentioned Norton as being a good product in another post? Like I've said already, if you want to stop crap getting in the system the first place, using a product like Norton is dumb. Instead you want to use the permissions and the GPEDIT, as well as user policies and more. I do pen. testing regularly and using no third party tool whatsoever I set my system to be entirely read-only access in the test profile. The viruses couldn't do jack.
Sorry, but those arguments just don't fly these days. Norton is a horrible product. AVG may not be perfect, but it's better.
I simply presumed the user was running Windows XP as most are these days, and failed to notice the Windows 98 in the title.
Bit dumb of me really.
Still... although Windows 9x has no security, even at the kernel level... and is really just a single user OS [much like Mac OS] with a basic multi-user functionality [also like Mac OS 9] there is no true way to secure it. There is no limited user functionality... you could possibly use some really old-ass version of Norton or McAfee... hell they were good back then, but I'm talking WAY back then. Avast or AVG is fine for an older system like that... hell I like that AVG does a boot scan on classic.
Agreed, W98 is not half as secure as later systems. I still keep my old W98SE box working (XP being my main machine) and the last "nasty" I had on W9x was "Happy 1999" - yes, 9 years ago.
I just run all the freebies (inc AVG). Dumped Norton yonks ago because it was too bloated for W95. The rest is down to safe browsing, Script Sentry, SpywareBlaster and so forth. Maybe I was lucky or perhaps it was because, like yourself, I am not "the average user" and, over the years, learned to tech my way out of trouble....
