Have you tried the repair option on IE?

"instead of just formatting the computer" (?)

It has never been necessary to format a computer just in order to reinstall an application.

If IE6 is not currently on the machine then you would run its installation program.

If it is on the machine but is misbehaving, you can try the repair function available from 'add/remove programs'

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

I guess that wasn't worth mentioning in your intitial post.

Sounds like it could be an issue with your security settings. Running the repair function generates Fix IE Log.txt in c:\windows - if there is a problem with IE, it might be reflected there

It is always worth summarizing some previous post (or giving a link) when reposting. Otherwise you are likely to get the same suggestions all over again, which is no good to anybody.

Standard method of reinstalling ie 6 is to navigate to the folder which holds your ie 6 installation cab files and double click on ie6setup.exe. Be sure to check each box for each item that was previously installed or the files will NOT be extracted and installed which will overwrite your current files.

What - you didn't save the installation cab files? You'll have to redownload them unless you can find same on a CD that is in your desk right now. Take a look, there is a very good possibility that you already have them. Otherwise start here.
