I have an annoying problem. IE starts automatically every now and then and tries to log on to the net, ..greatpage.org. When I am surfing this page suddenly replaces the actual page. I do not remember that I have ever visited this page. What is happening ? I have two friends that have experienced the same problem. Has anybody else this problem ?

Download ad-aware, to get rid of these kind of things. It searches your registry and files for all kind of spyware and related programs. It is free. This is the url http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html

It would not hurt to also check your connection settings and make sure it is NOT checked to always dial up when internet connection is not present. Go to IE icon right click to properties, connection settings and check there.

Ad-aware removed many items, but the main problem is still there. On startup the page always appear. Is it possible to trace what is happening on startup ?

Hi Ragnar,
I checked but couldn't find any log file tracing every step on my hard disk!
Anyway, below is some general information regarding how to launch a program at startup. As far as I know, there are 7 ways to launch a program at startup; check whether there's something unusual there:
(points 1-4 can be done by Start/Run/Sysedit/OK...)
(point 6 includes 1-5 and partly 7)
1-c:\Config.sys (Dos drivers)
2-c:\Autoexec.bat (Dos programs)
3-c:\Windows\System.ini (drivers) especially shell=explorer.exe something.exe (you shouldn't have anything after explorer.exe... Nimda added load.exe here)
4-c:\Windows\Win.ini [Windows] Run= or Load= (programs)
5-Startup Folder at c:Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
6-Start/Run/MSconfig/OK... Startup tab...
7-Registry (drivers, services and TSRs=resident programs)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
&
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
&
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
(in the Registry, there are also 2 "Runonce"s just close the "Run"s but as the name says it, it's only for the first time -install- but remember that Nimda kept changing Runonce to be loaded again at next startup)Don't forget to save the Registry before changing something there ie 2 hidden & system files:
-c:\Windows\system.dat
-c:\Windows\user.datHTH
