Subject: IE 6.0 SP1 can't uninstall itOS: Windows 98SECPU/Ram: AMD 1.2 Ghz/320 SDRAM100 |
Comment: Hi Everybody, I downloaded a small file that in turn finished downloading the complete Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1. I haven't really had any problems with the browser but the updated Outlook Express often does not respond and I have to close it with ctrl+alt+del, then it will work the second time. This is not really what I'm posting this message about. What I really want to do is uninstall all of it. There is and entry under add/remove programs in the control panel, but when I attempt to uninstall it, there is an option to restore the previous windows configuration, but it is grayed out so I can't select it. This really P*****S me off. I tried going to Internet Explorers web site, but there's no direct link to someone that I could contact at microsoft without paying for it. There are newsgroups but I never got a reply from that. Seems everone there is having trouble too. Does Microsoft Suck sometimes? I have a couple of other problems that I will do in another post. I appreciate all the help I get here. Thanks, Larr L

Reply: (edit)If you do not have an image backup (like Ghost) or a revert utility (like GoBack), you are dog meat. M$ SP's CANNOT be uninstalled in any way that I know of. Checkout GoBack (www.Roxio.com), it has saved my dumb butt mucho times. Ray

Reply: (edit)Just to clarify my previous post. I may have misled you into believing that one or the other of the utilities I mentioned could be of help with your current problem. NOT SO! Either or both must be installed before the problem occurs. Sorry if I gave you false hope. Ray

Reply: (edit)well, there IS a way to uninstall IE, its a bit round about, but I have tried it and it works. delete the Internet Explorer folder in the Program Files folder and then reinstall windows (over itself) the default version of IE must get installed along with win 98. It will be IE 4.0 or most likely 5.0 depending obn ur version of Win 98. ...and keep ur windows install cd ready before deleting anything. I suggest u delete IE folder in Dos mode (deltree) in order to avoid the many warning messages windows will pop-up Good Luck, Kailas

Reply: (edit)on second thoughts, thought this method does work, you cant technically call it "uninstall", I have coined the words "beating MS" ---> LOL any better names fr methods like this to beat about the bush, but get the task done ?

Reply: (edit)Hi Kailas, I tried what you said, but for some reason it didn't work. Instead of deleting the folder, I moved it to another partition. Then I re ran Windows SetUp. For some reason it didn't reinstall IE. It sounded to me that it would work. I moved the original folder back to get my browser back up. Thanks for your help anyway. Whatever I did wrong or didn't do right, too bad for me. I downloaded. IE Eradicator as per Bryco's post but havent tried it yet. Thanks, Larry L
