Hi,
I have recently upgraded internet explorer to version 6 service pack 1. I guess its not installed properly and I am having the following problems:

1. Whenever I click on a link and a new page appears, that page does not load, All i see is a blank page with the IE icon in the top right corner moving. This goes on and on. Finally i have to cick on stop and refresh and the page loads within seconds. This happens every time i click on a link that opens in a new window. In case it opens in the same window there is no problmes at all.

2. After I upgraded to IE6 SP1, I am not able to install norton anitvirus (neither 2002 nor 2003 nor 2005). I get an error message saying "there is an internet explorer error. Do you want to contnue running scripts on this page ?" It does not make any difference when i click either yes or no. It just stops. Worst is as the antivirus as has not completely installed, I am unable to uninstall it.

3. I am also not able to uninstall IE 6 or go back to the previous version of the IE i.e Version 5 which was originally installed on my machine and was running fine.

Thanks

Well, you have a few choices. I, personally have been using IE6 for years and would recommend IE6. Otherwise, IE5.5 with service packs. I wouldn't recommend going back to IE5. (unless you have absolutely no other choice).
===========================================

First remove Norton. Here are 2 Symantec pages to help you with that. For Norton Antivirus 2003 or earlier:
Removing Norton 2003

For Norton Antivirus 2005:

Removing Norton 2005
===========================================

Then try these, in order and see what happens.
1) Try to reinstall IE6
2) Try to repair IE6. Click Start->Run.
Type: msinfo32. When System Information pops up, click Tools and choose IE repair option (if it is there). It may not be if the install is bad.
3) Try downloading IEfix. You'll need VB6 runtime,as well, if you don't already have it on your computer:
IEfix

Microsoft VB6 Runtime

Incidently, IEfix might have the advantage of fixing the blank page issue as well.

4)If all above fail, then you just need to get IE off of your computer. DO NOT do this if you haven't got a copy of some version of IE to reinstall. There will be no browser to get to the net until you reinstall.
IEradicator
===========================================

Once Norton is uninstalled and IE is working, then attempt to reinstall Norton.

Post back with results. If you still have the blank page issue, we can work on that next.

Which part(s) don't work? Did you uninstall Norton per the instructions at the links?

Did it uninstall completely? Did IEfix function OK? Did IEradicator uninstall IE okay? IE still gives you a blank page? You didn't reinstall Norton did you?

Since these are only words, it would help to give a lot of details.

Hi,

Yes I have uninstalled Norton. Thereafter I downloaded IEFix and VBrun 6. First I installed VBrun 6 and then tried running IEfix. It says it has fixed the thing. But when i restart the machine and run Internet explorer the same problem surfaces again (i.e. the blank page issue). Thereafter I used IEradicate and removed the entoire browser. Then using netcaptor I downloaded the Entire IE6 SP1 from Microsoft's website and reinstalled the same. But again when i started the browser the same problem !!! (Blank page).

Whats worse is, previously with IE5 / IE 5.5 I did not have the blank page issue. But now even if I install IE 5 / IE 5.5 I get the blank page issue.

I havent yet installed Norton AV and am not going to install it until the IE issue is resolved b'cos I am sure the problem with NAV installation is on account of IE Problem

???

Seems like once removing IE with IEradicator, the blanks should have gone away. Since they didn't, here is a checklist of possible items. Before going down the list, click here to download mcrepair from Microsoft. Run it and answer yes to all questions. It will correct file versions of critical files for IE. Check to see if it fixes the blank problem. If not, THEN go down the list.

mcrepair download

A) Start here:
IE->Tools->Internet Options->Programs Tab.
Click Reset web settings button.

B) Make sure you disable all popup blockers and see if that is the cause.

C) One or more of the following DLLs might be improperly registered.

1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

5. Repeat, substituting each of these additional DLLs:
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)

D) If that doesn't work:
For Windows version (Win 98/ME/2000/XP) - Download iefix:
http://www.winxptutor.com/download/iefix.zip

It is a general purpose repair utility for Internet Explorer which repairs Internet Explorer by registering it's core DLL files. Additionally if it detects Windows 2000/XP as the Operating System, it runs SFC to restore missing or corrupt Windows system files.

Requires Microsoft VB6 runtimes for Windows 98/ME systems, download here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7B9BA261-7A9C-43E7-9117-F673077FFB3C&displaylang=en

E) Start->Settings-> Folder Options->File types Tab
Locate each of the 4 file types listed below. Click Edit and click the Set Default button.

Also verify that each command line is correct:

URL:File Transfer Protocol "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

URL:Gopher Protocol "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Also while in File Types, Use DDE may be checked. Try Unchecking
it to see if that makes your links work.

Hi,

Thanks for all the help. None of the above worked. I reinstalled windows and got the problem sorted. Now everything works fine, the IE6 SP1, Norton everthing....thanks again.

But there is one interesting thing that i have noticed. In our office we have three other systems running Win 98 SE. I installed IE6 SP1 on these machines and i had the same problem (i.e. blank page issue) however, norton was working all right. Its really surprising!!!!!!

Thanks

I had a very bizarre problem that none of the conventional fixes would help - the problem was that the url links in programs other than the browser pages (such as Eudora or Outlook) would slow down to a 45 second response before opening a browser window - whether the browser was Firefox or IE6 (both installed on a WinXP machine with all XP updates installed) - I finaly unchcecked all the DDE links as suggested below - and now the url links work.

Note: the folder options are located under Control Panel..
--------------------
E) Start->Control Panel-> Folder Options->File types Tab
Locate each of the 4 file types listed below. Click Edit and click the Set Default button.

Also verify that each command line is correct:

URL:File Transfer Protocol "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

URL:Gopher Protocol "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Also while in File Types, Use DDE may be checked. Try Unchecking
it to see if that makes your links work.
