I've installed IE 5.5 on Win 95 right over IE 4.0. And now it says that it cannot find server. I don't know exactly if there some specific settings in IE 4.0. My wife installed IE 5.5. right over it. What maybe the problem?

Is it possible that IE 5.5. is not compatible with Win 95?

IE 5.5 is the highest version that will run on 95, so that's not the problem.

Might try the 'repair' function available in the uninstall menu - maybe some older file versions were kept? Hard to say, but check to ensure that your settings are correct for your connection type (dial-up, LAN etc)

I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime

Yes, you don't say if you use Dial-up or LAN, that would be useful to know. If you use dial-up, does your computer even attempt to connect? If not, verify in IE's Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections and see if the [.] always dial my default connection option is checked. I also recommend installing the DUN 1.4 update for Win 95. Find this update in the Getting Started / Updates section of my Windows 95 page.

If you use LAN, you might want to toggle [.] automatically detect settings.

Thanks for your answers. But it doesn't solve the problem. I didn't mention that the connection works for irc for example, but doesn't work for a browser. That's it. I had two variants: one that IE 5.5. is not compatible with Win 95, and second that there was a proxy setting or DNS IP, or something, don't know exactly what, in IE 4.0. and that it was erased while installation of an IE 5.5.

A friend of mine is now installing windows 98 on the computer. But somehow I feel, that it won't solve the problem...

If you get internet traffic with other software, then chances are you got it right: either your IE is set to use a proxy that no longer works, or your DNS entry points are set wrong. Now you still don't tell us if you use dial-up or LAN, but proxy settings are located in tools -> internet options -> connections then click either [settings] or [LAN settings] and uncheck "use proxy", then try a popular address like CNN or GOOGLE to see if you get any traffic. You may have to try a couple times.

As for primary/secondary DNS, in dial-up try [settings] -> [properties] -> [server types] -> [TCP/IP Settings] and check [.] server assigned IP address & [.] server assigned name server address. If this doesn't work, contact your ISP for primary and secondary DNS and switch the second entry to [.] specify name server addresses and input the DNSes manually.

If all fails, delete your current dial-up default and then use [add] to create a new one via the IC wizard.
