Subject: IE 4.0 Starts IE 5.0?
Comment:

OK, now I'm confused.

I am running Win98B on a Pentium 133mHz machine with 40MB RAM. I installed IE 5.0 some time back and thought that I was using IE 5.0 via the program file "Iexplorer.exe" and indeed I was, however the file version was 4.0! I discovered this while looking at the file types and what programs open them. Under GIF I discovered that the version of IE that opened the file was IE 4.0! When I checked the version of "Iexplore.exe", indeed the version was 4.0! When I envoked it by double clicking on it the browser I had been using all this time poped up! The preview window that pops up proclaims that I am using IE 5, just as it always had!

Now I have reinstalled the OS several times for various reasons and I have had Win98A on this machine at one time as well and I have never seen this happen before while using IE 5.0. Under Add/Remove I have noticed that there are no IE 4.0 compatibility files to remove as there were in prevoius installations of IE 5.0 over IE 4.0. I have always kept them for "compatibility" reasons.

Under the Internet Explorer folder I noticed that the true IE 5.0 program file was named "ie20.exe". When I double click on it to launch it I get a pop-up warning that reads: "Internet Explorer Compatibility mode" (box title), "This is being run in compatibility mode and not all features are enabled". I had never seen this warning before. After clicking OK IE 5.0 came up as usual only because of certain setting I could tell it was not the exact same browser that I had been using all these months.

So now I am confused. Why did I get this warning, what exactly does it mean (all features do seem to be enabled)? If I delete the IE 4.0 version and rename the IE 5.0 file "Iexplorer.exe" will I still get the warning? If I do can I safely check the box next to "In the future, do not show me this dialog box"? Just exactly what is "compatiblilty mode" in this case.

Any info will be greatly appreciated. TIA.

search the net and see if you can still find a version called 5.01sp and download it and it should cure all your ills. You will have to look for it a bit because 5.5 (the troublemaker) is now available, but it is out there. Just saw it a couple days ago while looking for something else. Try Google

Thanks for the info, I once updated IE 5.0 to IE 5.01, maybe I should do so again (I am glad to see that I am not the only one who thinks IE 5.5 causes problems). However I solved the problem shortly after I posted. Here's how:

I noticed that there were a lot of files in the Internet Explorer folder on my Win95 machine while only a few on my Win98 machine. I removed the following files from the folder on my Win95 machine (the problem machine); Ie4.dll, Iedetect.dll, Iesetup.cif, Iexplore.exe (the IE 4.0 version) and Ie20.exe (the IE 5.0 version). I then copiedIe4.dll,Iedetect.dll, Iesetup.cif and Iexplore.exe (version 5.0) from the Win98 machine and copied them onto the Win95 machine. All worked well! I do not know exactly which file(s) did the trick but one day I might take the time and find out.
