IDE controller(s) & IDE CD-ROM drive problems

I am having trouble with the IDE controller(s) and the IDE CD-ROM drive on my Presario 9546. The Floppy controller and both IDE controllers have the yellow exclamation point next to them in the device manager. I am also getting the message (from the Performance tab) that I am running MS-DOS compatibility mode paging and all drives are also running in MS-DOS mode. However, I tried REMming out every line in both CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT and I still get this message. I can't seem to remove the Opti dual IDE controller itself, which the device manager says is working properly, but both IDE controllers say that the device is not present, is not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed. Somehow I also had six CD-ROM drives. I tried removing them all to see if windows would reinstall the proper drive, but instead it left me with no CD-ROM at all in device manager. If I add the device driver and MSCDEX lines to the system files, it appears in My Computer and I can access it. What can I do to correct these "errors" in my IDE controllers and how can I restore the CD-ROM to the device manager? Any ideas?

A known problem with Opti chipsets, it also effects "standard" IDE controllers. If windows fails to load protected mode drivers for the HDD controllers, on rebooting a key is added to the registry which causes windows to load compatibility mode drivers. Search the registry for a "NOIDE=1" statement and delete it. Windows will then reboot and load the protected mode drivers.
