Subject: IDE cdrom drive problems in win 98 with other scsi drives |
Comment: I used 2 IDE cdroms one NEC 8 speed and I bought a new 40 speed one, both work perfectly in my home computer a p166 win 98, but when I tried to install any one of them in my work computer, pII450 it's fine they are detected by the bios and windows 98 I get the icon in my computer I can access all the folders and see all the files normal, but when I try autorun or setup on any of my cds like win98 cd or coreldraw8 then I get that lovely blue screen with a vxd error from some address, and the computer hangs. I also have a scsi hard drive which is my boot drive and a yamaha 4x4x16 rewritable cdrom drive, and an Ibm deskstar Udma Ide drive which I use as master and the cdrom drive as slave, I tried many combinations, but nothing seems to work any ideas on why the ide cdrom cannot run executable files.

Reply: (edit)WOW...with how many drives you have in that thing I am sure you are getting interrupt and resource conflicts somewhere along the way. It will be really hard to keep everything straight and to even sort it all out. If you want double check each drives interupts and resources. They most likely are overlapping one another. If possible just avoid the situation by disabling the autrun as ergmiester suggested, however, more than likely you will see other problems in the future.

Reply: (edit)If you have three or more IDE devices on your system, including the CD-ROM drive, you may need to modify the Windows NT Registry to add support for more than two IDE devices. For more information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Q103934: Adding More Than Two IDE or ESDI Drives in Windows NT

Reply: (edit)I'm trying to install windows 98 to a SCSI hard drive but I'm unable to install a SCSI CD Rom. I have no experience with SCSI devices. I'm using a Compaq Deskpro XL 590 with a Matsus---a CR 503B CD Rom. Please Help.
