Comment:

I have a Thompson speedtouch 330 USB modem and i am using the latest driver from Thompson. The computer can connect to the internet with no problem. i decided to use this computer as a gateway computer to the rest of my network and so installed ICS, and whilst connected to the internet, i ran the ICS (Internet Connection sharing) wizard. when it came to choosing the adapter that was connected to the internet, the Thompson speedtouch device was not found. i checked and the device is connected to the internet and i am writing this message on the computer right now, but ICS doesn;t recognise the USB modem. Can anyone help me get internet connection sharing working on this computer.
i can tell you i repeated this exercise on my windows ME computer and the result was the same. The ICS wizard did not find the USB modem that was connected to the internet. Are there any 3rd part programs i can try. Is there a way to get this service working manually. i am not an expert with computers, and so detailed configuration steps would be appreciated.

for the techy guys here is the setup log

Q Is it compatible with windows 98?
That is, can i install it onw windows 98 and use this as the proxy server?

I was a little quick last time with the windows ME, and i would like to expand on it a little and say what i think is a conclusion to the problem.

On windows ME, when you run the ICS setup wizard, it does recognise the Network adapter and after restarting the ip address is duly changed to 192.168.0.1, but....
when you start the internet connection and then click on explorer and then you get error 'this page cannot be displayed' even though you can see you're connected. When you click on Internet options /connections and then Sharing, which is just below the LAN settings, you notice that the box that says, 'select the dapter you will use to connect to the internet' is blank. When you click the drop down list, the adapter is not available for selection.

What me thinks is, is that ICS is not compatible with broadband connections for windows 9.x or ME. Its OK it is a client computer, but for the ICS computer, either windows 2000 SP4 or windows XP are required. The only other issue is the adapter itself, but since it works under normal situations, i can't see that as being the problem.

i will check back for more answers later.

Have you considered employing a $15 router?

well it won't cost $15 in the UK, more like $115

but this would be an additional charge to what i have already paid and besides this it defeats the object of the puzzle i am faced with. Most people in business don't want to keep pay pay pay. The person who sold me the ADSL modem obviously didn't think and i didn't think, that i would one day be trying to do ICS.

However to give your due, i know you are right. Friends of mine have also given me this advice, but i am trying to avoid spending any more money if there is a software solution.

I'm just thinking aloud.

I am also in the UK and use the same ADSL USB modem (complete with dial-up Connect Box working etc). They seem quite popular in the UK although I think this is waning.

However, I'm not at all sure that type of arrangement is suitable for a gateway situation. Perhaps ICS requires an "always on" arrangement.

I might be quite wrong - see what others think.

Are you sure the Tosh 220C is up to the task you described. 400mhz/ 16mb Ram seems a little lite in the resources for this, ???

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

In the UK a Modem/Router is under £30.00 inc P&P. I do not know where you get £50+ from, been shopping in PCWorld ?

An alternative may be: http://www.pond-weed.com/speedtouch/

Hello, yes perhaps i exaggerated a little, but £30 is not $15 either.

Well i am trying the 3rd party utility above and at the moment it is working fine. In fact the tired old computer with its 16mb of RAm that stuggles to draw breath if you ask it do anything, actually passes information to and from the internet at a very high rate. This page took (computing.net) took less than 3 seconds to load. I've tried loads of them, bbc, microsoft and others, and they take between 3 to 5 seconds.

One snag for analog X if they come back to see. The computers on the LAN can't update antivirus definitions. I changed it to the default gateway http port that was given and it just doesn't do anything. The program believes its offline.

In principle if we get it all sorted out, i more than happy to purchase a licence for the program.

Thank-you for all your help, but especially to Walter Mitty - many thanks

Sometimes, it is easy to get carried away & presumably suggest solutions based primarily on U.S. specifics .... my bad!

Anyhow, glad you got the issues sorted eventually without using a router. Although, it would have been the fastest & easiest way to get it done & if I might add, a viable long term solution.

Perhaps, one thing that got me scratching my head, is how the 400MHz machine with only 16MB of RAM is loading webpages with an average speed three seconds ... I think you might have embellished that jist also by quite a bit ;-)

no, no, no, defintely not! I haven't tried downloading anything though, it really is simply looking at the web pages. i switched the server 2003 on and set the default gateway to the win98 machine. it opens web pages really quickly. i would say it is definitely loading web pages between 3 - 5 seconds. Even more, i would have suspected that i would have heard the hard drive really grinding away to fulfil the tasks, but in fact all you get is the occasional tickling noise. i haven't tried sending emails yet, and i suspect that is another can of worms.

Glad to hear that my "thinking aloud" was proved wrong on this and that you found a solution using Speedtouch 330 Modem.

I must try not to be so pessimistic LOL.
