It seems that a lot of programs and most utilities places an icon on the taskbar. I'm getting too many. How do I selectively remove some of them

Remove them from start up or go into each individual program thats been start are windows and see if they have a option to not to load on start up of windows. Or you if you know where to find the reg key to change up the settings on that.
I hope this helps you out.

Click Start, Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information. Now Click Start, and untick anything that has no right starting up. Some progs need unticked twice to get the message. If anything refuses to move its likely to have an option to disable its start up in its own preferences which you can untick.
