You may try a Scanreg /Restore in DOS Prompt

1. Restart your PC

2. As the Computer starts press and hold down CTRL or F8 ( depending on the machine)

3. From Windows Startup Menu, select 5.Command prompt only by using the arrow key and then press the ENTER key

4. At the C: Prompt, type the command, Scanreg /Restore and then press the ENTER key.

NOTE: There is No space after C:\> and before Scanreg.; There is a single space after Scanreg . There is no space after / (forward slash)

5. Wait until a blue screen Microsoft Registry Checker appears showing a maximum of 5 dates in which cab files of registry back up in which Windows started normally are shown as for example:

10-03-02 Started rb 005.cab
10-02-02 Started rb 004.cab
09-30-02 Started rb 003.cab
09-29-02 Started rb 002.cab

6. Using the arrow key, select a date before the date of startup problem so that you can restore a backup copy of Registry when Windows started normally. and displayed normal sized Desktop Icons.
7. Click Enter.
8. When you get the message that a “good registry has been restored”, Restart and see if you can get on to the Desktop. with its normal sized icon

Please post your result.

the advice above was a bit hasty for a problem such as you have.

One simple fix may be to rightclick the desktop and select 'properties'
click the 'settings' tab and check what it is set at under "Screen Area"
a 15" monitor is usually set at 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768
a 17" set at 1024 x 768 to 1280 x 1024

The higher the numbers the smaller the icons and text.

I also suggest re running Scanreg /restore and choose a date that is recent BUT BEFORE you ran scanreg /restore. This should bring your system back to as close to what it was as possible.

If the above using Desktop Properties does not work, you may need to re-install your Video Card Drivers.

Scanreg /restore is a good tool for system repairs, but used the wrong way it can be dangerous.
