I have an Icon situation. A few months ago, I arranged the Icon leading to software (both M-S and others) in to a rectangular form. Two Icons essentially went to no place, so they got removed. I then swung a couple of others into their now vacated holes.
Hit right click, align Icons, and thought I was done.
Now about every third day instead of getting the rectangle of Icons as I last seen them, I now get a biggie triangular arrangement.
How can I get the Icons to "stay" where I put them, instead of moving around?

Wm, Many use "Icon Restore" which is available for Free at the link below.

Aha, there are lots of things that "shouldn't" happen (but do).
I've found, particularly on Win9x, that icons do sometimes move around due to the odd system glich or using safe mode. This might have been made worse because I used to spread the icons over the desktop (games in the middle for kids with waving mice), rather than have them all down the left. At one time I resorted to desktop snaps so that I could restore them to my preferred order when necessary.
I fully endorse "Icon Restore" which saved me from all that nonsense. Two clicks and they were back the way I wanted them. I'm pretty sure Tufenuf put me onto it then - way back.

Well, I haven't experienced that issue. Not to say it doesn't happen. Booting into safe mode usually does change the screen resolution unless someone is running VGA to start.
My comments above were meant to give the OP some incite as to why the icons are moving. Games many times also require a different resolution than your normal desktop settings.

That's fine, I quite understand the reasons for your comments and the safe mode situation. As for other times, then I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones - there seem to be a few of us about.
It's much more rare with XP and I've never had problems on Vista. Newer systems seem to require a lot less tinkering so maybe that was part of the problem with 9x.

Just another thought. Go to the "How-to's" section on this website and find one I put in called "Quickly Rebuild Icons" (about two thirds down).
If you have not already increased the icon cache, it might just help this problem if you increase it as suggested. Forget the first paragraph and the last two because this "how-to" was intended to address a different, but perhaps related, problem.
