Hello, I am trying to install Win98se onto
an IBM thinkpad 760 w/a new unformatted
hd. I used the boot disk, & when i swap
the floppy for the cd rom drive, windows
will not install. I get a no operating system
message. Any ideas? Thanks

Thanks for your reply! The floppy disk is
the standard Boot Disk supplied by MS
with Win98. I have used fdisk, created a
primary DOS partition, but when I put in
the win98 cd, still get no operating
system. I have tried starting up with f1 key
& that got me to bios config, but it wouldnt
let me config. Still confused, but thanks

G,
after you use fdisk, you must format the drive before you try to use the cd to install, otherwise it won't recognize the HDD,
and are you sure the CD drive is in working order?

Kevin,
I am still stumped. Yes, the cd drive
works fine. My question is what do I use
to format the drive? All I have are the MS
Boot floppy & the win98 install disk. I
used the floppy to fdisk, is there an option
to format from it? If so, how do I do it? I
get to A:\\> then blinking cursor. Maybe
there's something wrong internally. Ill
keep trying & Thanks again.

G,
send me your email address,,I have done the same thing to my thinkpad760 about a month ago. what worked for me is I copied format.exe from my pc,to my bootdisk, that way it is on the bootdisk,,format from a: after fdisk,,that way the HDD is formated and recognized,,then go to the CDrom,,,,,I also have the original manual for it,,like my father used to say,,"when all else fails,,read the directions"
format should be in your windows\command directory,,copy it to your bootdisk and let me know how that works.

along with Kevin's answer you need to go to the ibm website and READ READ READ.
They have all sorts of drivers, files, how to's etc for their old laptops.I have several, an old 360PE (PEN) a couple of 360's (one upgraded to a 586xx, and 38xd, (P233)
I have been helped a LOT by the info at IBM
Generally, format.com is ALWAYS on the cd, not on the standard bootdisk, and fdisk is generally on the bootdisk.

G,
that's the part I forgot to mention,I spent quite abit of time on IBM's site finding all the various drivers I needed,,infrared, audio etc..etc.. I burned quite a few onto a CD if you want to save some download time,LMK,,but I would HIGHLY recomend that either way,you READ,READ,READ like the above post says to,tons of valuable info there on all IBM laptops,,
Hope you get it going allright
