Comment:

I just installed a new system board in my IBM thinkpad 600. I am having some trouble. I got it installed OK, and got windows installed. I had put a new 20gb hdd in, and it is only detecting 8gb.
The problem is, weird. Once its been shut down and then restarted, the system loses the date and time, and its telling me that the fan isnt working. I replaced the fan, and the backup battery, but I still get the error, that system board is bad. Or going bad. Can anyone tell me how I can pinpoint maybe what part of the board may be bad?
I hope this makes sense.
THanks
Jenni

I don't know what to tell you.

Have you got (downloaded) the "hardware maintenance manual?)

There may be THREE batteries, I don't remember for sure if the 600 series has two or three.

The MAIN which obviously powers the thing in operation.

The BIOS or CMOS battery, which "remembers" the bios settings
(That one may be dead.)

It 'may' have a backup or standby battery, which remembers what's going on when the thing is in certain sleep mode(s)

Hmm, Yes I have the hardware manual. It is not telling me really how to fix the problem. If there is 3 batteries, I have no idea where the third would be. I took the one from my original board, and put in the new one, the wires came off, maybe I put them back on backwards? I think I have the black wire on the top, red on the bottom.
Thanks

Red wires usually go on top of coin cell batteries like those.
