IBM Aptiva case & mobo

I have an IBM Aptiva 2158 270. It has an AMD K6II 400Mhz processor. I am considering upgrading to an Athlon but the motherboard: Acer V72MA is a socket7 and won't support the Athlon. I believe this mobo is an ATX type. Can I replace this mobo with any ATX type on the market? Does the Aptiva's funky design require an equally funky mobo? If anyone has had experience replacing a MOBO in an IBM Aptiva, I'd appreciate any feedback.

Most Aptivas I've seen are proprietary. The can only use IBM mobo. Your mobo should supoort 550 mhz. You can ususlly get a new case for $29 to 49. Just make sure you get a 300 watt power supply which is required for AMD Athlons. I usually use www. knowledgemicro.com for a price guide on stuff.
