Hello,
I have an ibm aptiva pent. 200 mhz, 80mb 256kb cache and let this to be nameless computer repair store up grade my system from win95 to 98 and install the 80mb drive. They had to change my system config. making my original system recovery disk no good. BUT they provided no new disk. I want to wipe my drive clean and install win200 or xp. what is the best way to do this and which os should I install based upon my listed system spec.
thanks alot,
mike

At 200MHz & 80Mb stay with 95 or 98 - not enough RAM or CPU to run XP, and 2K also requires much more memory.

**note that the cache size has no real bearing on either RAM or CPU requirements

Thanks - it's hardly my quote - heard variations of it many times - seems to be attributed to the late great Sci Fi writer Isaac Asimov

No - although I am running a 'hot' new machine (compared to my old one anyways)

866MHz with a 'true' 56K flex modem - yay!

It's a classic with no small amount of truth behind it - and also one of the sigs I'd used here.

Not to hijack this thread much further - Michael, has your question been answered?

hello jboy, LEXX and ham30!
install the 80mb drive.
Isn't that funny?
You just cant have 80MB hard disk (I dont know if they were even made) running win95. At the same time, its not a typo beacuse a 80GB hard disk wont be compatible with a mobo that has a 200 MHz processor in it. The OP is clearly confused or is pulling a fast one here.

The last IBM Aptiva of similar specs I worked on had a BIOS limitation of 8GB hard drive. Did they install a drive overlay program to make the system recognize the 80GB? Do you have a message about the floppy drive when you boot?

Hey, Kailas

To be sure, the quoted specs are a confusing welter of information - I'd originally misread the cache size as indicating the RAM, but I missed the reference to the 80Mb HDD - that would be more suitable for Win31 ; )

Oops, sorry. An 80MB drive is a little small for even Win95.

Lets not pull the guy to pieces. If the pro is right then they could mean an 8GB. But you cant get that size new anymore. Can you? If this guy came here for help. I dont think this is a good thing to do to them. I make typos all the time. But if the pro is right and its 8Gb hard drive then the reply by ham30 stands.

I don't think we're mocking the OP - just questioning the information given.

As is so often the case, clarification would be helpful - although I believe the original question has been answered - no way will XP or 2K run on that system

I remember someone here ages ago. Spouting off you could run XP on a 486. That might be true. If you fancy waiting a week for it to boot up.

Oh sure, I recall reading a few articles - supposedly it is possible, although hardly desirable.

Sounds worse than running 95 on a 386

he cant possibly have an 80mb harddrive with windows 98 on it much less 95

i know from experience that 95 needs at least 90mb for the install

and like everyone else pointed out you already have the best os for that computer
so i would suggest that you keep 98 on it

what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other

We are not mocking Micheal, but asking for him to post back because as is obvious we have taken pains to contribute to this thread and will have a sense of satisfaction if we know our responses have been of help. With confusing data given, it is near impossible to give any concrete advice.

What is irritating is in most of such cases the OP does not reply. And Mr. Micheal has not yet...

I am sorry about not replying regarding my aptiva i was trying all night working on it.
when we bought this system it had a 2 gig hard drive but we got a 20 gig hard drive and upgraded to 128 ram but we were on win95 so we had to upgrade to win 98 and this system cld only recognize as u all said 8 gig so the computer repair shop said they had to fake the bios out or something to make it recognize the space. we had to also change the modem card. needles to say it cost $500 at the end and we shld have just bought a new computer but they got us deeper and deeper. we just want to set this back up for the kids to use. I appreciate all your help. Sorry for the errors and delay..
Thanks
Michael
