Hi All.
Tell me why so many people seeking help go to the trouble of giving a none working e-mail address. So many times I have taken the time to Post a rather long e-mail, just to have it returned a few moments later.
Why do they even bother to give an e-mail address. speaking for myself I find this very anoying. Now that I have got this of my chest, have a nice day Guy's, both sexes.

They probably think that putting something in is mandatory, so to protect themselves against spam/etc they put in junk. I'd bet that putting an "(optional)" beside the e-mail box would cut down on this quite a bit.

Hello Oldhobo,
The reason is very simple.....
In fact every post writen in this forum appear later in any research motor on the Web, and unfortunatly you get there many companie's using sorts of robots consulting which are programmed to collect all emails address's possibles, to be used as mass mails for advertising's you receive in your mailbox, if you don't protect yourself you realize you get everyday at least between 20 and 30 mass mails, and you need to read all headlines to find the good mails you are expecting from your friends....

Hi IMP.
Yes I know, but what I was saying is they don't even have to leave an e-mail address. And most people have a secondary e-mail address that could be used for this type of situation don't you think.
Have a nice day.

Hi OldHobo, Imp, hi everyone,
To reconcile both points of view (address to be reached & protection from spam), people can apply some easy change:
- look at Imp's address... '@xhotmail'
- some advise to give an address such as Gerard.MeloneNO@SPAMfree.fr
- a French message board of mine automatically transforms members email addresses to Gerard.Meloneŕfree.fr (ŕ is the French sign for your at)
Such slight change allows humans to easily find the right address and avoids computers from using it for spam.Oldhobo... Of course, I don't write this to teach you anything (you already know all that) but to provide beginners with this easy way to protect their email addresses.
Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France

Hi all,
Another paragraph on the subject.
As Imp wrote it, some programs collect email addresses in order to sell them to marketing companies (sometimes leading to spam).
-Addresses are collected from forums (see my previous post for some protection).
-Addresses are collected from web sites as well (you know... the address of the webmaster that is at the bottom of home pages!). There is an easy way to encrypt the address to lead to a normal use to send a message (just clicking on the link) AND no possibility to suck it up for spam (programs).
The only links that I have are to French sites but you'll find lots from US sites (otherwise ask me).Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France

Hello Oldhobo and Frenchie,
Missed you guys on the firing line, enjoy your wit and sage, informative input. Welcome back, I'm sure I speak for all the regulars at comp.net,
charlie

"have a nice day Guy's, both sexes. "
I would love to know the ratio of guys to girls here and at every forum. I am a regular at a different forum which I am sure is all guys because it has been verified because one guy posted about it and took a poll. We need more women in this part of the world. That other forum is almost all hardware whereas this seems to be more software - makes sense.

Hi Charlie,
>Hello Oldhobo and Frenchie,
>Missed you guys
Very nice of you Charlie!
As you can see, difficult to forget about Computing.Net... sometimes more work... but we always come back to this wonderful forums!Enjoy your day,
Gérard from Paris, France

Because it's a *forum*!!
There should be no need to contact folks who post directly; add the replies to the discussion!

Bob, that's not really true.
Though I agree that answers to the questions should be posted here so that many can learn from one person's problem & solutions, I occasionally have a question or comment that falls outside the topic of the forum & have contacted many members directly, such as Terri, Mesich, Frenchie, and others. Having the email address available is very convenient. Anyone wishing to contact me directly is free to do so, though I encourage them to post here on the forum, if applicable.
Dave

I also agree that responses should be posted here especially if someone has a solution to a common problem because then the next person can find it using the search tool.
I also think email addresses are important for reasons stated above and because sometimes i find an old post and i have an answer to the problem. I think theres a 30 day limit that keeps you from replying to old posts so email is the only contact method left. I try to email the answer and it gets returned.
The only reason i can think of for inserting a fake address is because people think they have to put something in. Most of the other boards want a DNA sample before you can post and i absolutely hate hitting submit and being informed of something i missed. Most of the time the back button lets you fix the error but sometimes you have to retype the whole thing.
Its one of those things.. similar to the "proper subject line" threads. Some people will follow the "rules" and some wont.
Computing.net is one of the most relaxed boards on the web, no spam , pop-ups or worse.. and theres a whole bunch of smart techs here to help. I would estimate that maybe 3% of the posts here dont get solved.

So I guess people who want unsolicited e-mail from strangers can give their address. Those who don't want to give their e-mail addresses certainly shouldn't need to.
My biggest complaint is never hearing back from the person who left the original post. Who's opinion did you go with? Which solutions worked for you? etc.

Like Dave357 I have many email address of our regulars along with physical mailing addresses and even some phone numbers. Even of some of the people here that refuse to post an email address. Many times I wanted to help out by sending a simple file that was needed but without a VALID email that is impossible. And it looks very suspicious when someone comes back on a post and says if you want help then send me your email. I feel that if you are brave enough to bare yourself and your problems here on Computing.net then surely you can permit your email to be given out too? Maybe there are some loonies and goofballs out there lurking for email address to stalk down, but I honestly feel that Computing.net is a safe haven to hang out in. If it wasn't I wouldn't be here and I'm sure alot of you wouldn't be either. And even you who posted this Oldhobo, didn't post your email, but I have your site in my files along with your true identity and email. By the way I haven't heard from you in a while. And I also haven't forgot about that gif problem. Just keep forgetting to ask my photoshop expert to look into ebbeding a trademark into it for me. Write soon, ok?
Take care all,
Terri
P.S. I overhauled my site again.
