I am operating win98 , but I want to reforamt my hard disk (I have only on hard disk and two partition C: and D:, I want to format C: only)and reinstall win98...I will tell you what I did:
I've created a startup Disk...so do I have to copy another file(s) to the startup Disk..Pls tell me the whole steps:
1-What else files do I have to add to my startup Disk (and how)
2-How do I Format my Hard disk
3-Do I have to create new partition
4-Finally how can I acces my CDRom to reinstall win98....Thanks

First to your boot disk, If you made it with Win95 or 98 there is no need to add files.
Reboot witgh the boot disk inserted and see if your cd-rom works fine (there are some exceptional cd-rom that are not supported by this general purpose driver) If it does you may format your drive.Your boot disk has created an additional Ram-drive (should be E) there you have the format.com which you run format c: /q . /q is the parameter to quick format. Partioning would be unwise because you want to keep your D drive. After formatting, insert Win98 CDROM and take out the boot disk restart again.
2 possibilities
1. Your system boots directly the cd-rom because there is no system on your computer
2. It does not and boots nothing. Insert your noot disk and restart again.
Transfer system to c: by doing (on E) sys a: c:
then goto your cd-rom drive (normally f) in your case and run the install or setup file and install

You can either boot up PC using win98 CD or the floppy disk you've created.
1. Booting from CD:
This requires that you have BIOS that support booting from CD. Do so by pressing the key that displayed at the first screen when you bootup the PC (something along the line 'press ???> to enter SETUP'). Once you're in the SEUP CMOS (or BIOS) screen (DOS like), then search around for the booting options where it would mentioning the order of PC bootup (ie. 'A, C, CDROM') and you must change it to something like 'CDROM, A, C' or 'A, CDROM, C'. Now A is your floppy disk drive, CDROM is any of the CDROM you have, and C is your hard-disk. Remember to save changes before exit.
Put the win98 CD into the CDROM, then when the PC is booted, choose to bootup from CD. If you have only IDE CD-ROM (40 pins data cable and often connected to your motherboard ) then the CD drive (which should now be given another letter to access to the rest of the CD) is treated as floppy A:\ drive (the booting part only, which similar to the floppy disk) and another drive letter (I would guess as E:, as you've already got D:). The physical floppy disk drive is now given the letter B: (No body tells you this, but this is what it does). The bootup part (floppy disk size) of win98 CD cannot be seen, unless booting to it, as it is stored as an image file on the CD.
From A:\ prompt, do format c: /q - now the /q (stands for quick) just erase the File Allocation Table on your C: partition, thus it's very quick. If you, however, would like to reset the whole hard-disk (erase all the data etc.. ) then just obmit the /q flag.
Once done, goto E: and run SETUP.
2. Booting from floppy disk:To setup for CD-ROM, on your startup disk, check to make sure that your have files:
config.sys
autoexec.bat
oackcdrom.sys (for IDE-CDROM - only need this if you ONLY have IDE CDROM)
aspi???.sys (for SCSI CD-ROM - only need this if you ONLY have SCSI CDROM)(the .sys files can be found in windows/command directory - if I remember correctly).
and in the config.sys you have lines such as
device=oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001
if you have the IDE CD-ROM (40 pins data cable and often connected to your motherboard )
device=aspi???.sys /D:OEM001if you have the SCSI CD-ROM. Then in the autoexec.bat you will have a line
mscdex.exe /D:MSCD001 [/D:OEM001]
the part /D:MSCD001 (as it allocated to the line for the OAKCDROM.SYS in the config.sys - IDE CD-ROM) is used for IDE CDROMthe part /D:OEM001 (as it allocated to ASPI???.SYS in the config.sys) is for SCSI CDROM.
Check on your C:\ drive (root directory) see if you have a file called config.dos and autoexec.dos. If you do, edit these files and you'll probably find the old configuration before win98 was installed (DOS).
Bootup using the floppy. Whatever you do, don't go into the existing windows and run FDISK from there.

make the new startup disk from Control Panel
add remove programs from the file bootdisk.
Rest you can do.
