Subject: I want to back-up my emails in Outlook (Office97)
Comment:

Hello,
Would anyone out there know the name of the file in Outlook (MS Office 97), so that I can back-up my sent and received emails to a floppy disk. I assume there are separate files for "sent" emails and "received". I had a look in the directory but I can't work out which files contain the emails. I used to back up my email with Netscape communicator, and it was pretty easy to find the email files, but I can't work out which files they are in Outlook. I'd be grateful if anyone could assist,
Peter.

As far as we know the messages recieved in outlook express will be in the "Inbox" and sent will be in the
"Sent items".Follow the steps given below to take the backup of those folders.

Copy a folder

1.On the View menu, click Folder List.

2.click the folder you want to copy.

3.On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Copy Folder name.

4.In the Copy the selected folder to the folder list, click the location you want the folder copied to.

Regards,
Sherlock

If you go to Find/Files or Folders and search for *.*dbx you will find all of your e-mail folders, In Box, Outbox, Sent etc.
They can be copied straight over to a
re-formatted machine, for example, into the folders from whence they came.

Watch the sizes though, if they are too big for a floppy then you will need to prune out those which matter least and save them as inidividual .eml files on Windows Explorer.

Forgot to add that if you copy over the appropriate .dbx files to a machine with new empty ones your e-mails will return as if they have never been away.

You can do the same with the .wab file for your address book (even though it looks empty when you click on it) but you MUST use precisely the same file name - no exeptions.

Thankyou for the replies Sherlock and Derek.

Derek, I'm pretty sure that's the information I'm after. Thanks.
Sherlock, I tried your directions and from what I can see this only enables me to copy items from one folder within Outlook to another existing or new folder within Outlook. I am really aiming at copying the file so that if I lose my sent and received emails, e.g. if I have to wipe the hard drive, I can just reload Outlook and copy the appropiate file in the directory over the existing empty file, if you know what I mean.
Thanks again for your help.
Peter.
