I think I fried my motherboard...

I have an an Athalon II, 1000 MHZ computer, and it won't start up any more. Its like it isnt pluged in, but it is. And when I messed around in back it smelled faintly like used fireworks...

Oh and btw I an running Windows 98 and it made a funny noise when I tried to turn it back on (thats when I smelled the fireworks).

The first thing to do, is to make sure that your CPU fan is running!
This is the most likely cause of a burnt smell.
If you fried your CPU (processor) then the only thing to do is replace it.
Make sure your power supply has'nt died. (this is another cau7se of a burnt smell)

My fan wont turn on, the computer wont do anything. Oh and im not too advanced with computer hardware, what do you mean by a dead power source?

He means the power supply might have died, the metal box in the upper rear of the case. If you're not familiar with working on computers then I wouldn't suggest mucking around with the power supply because you could get shocked. Your best bet is to take it to a technician if you don't know anyone who's good working on computers. Richard is probably right, either the CPU is fried or the power supply and maybe the motherboard along with it. Hopefully it's only the power supply because they're relatively inexpensive to replace.
