Hello, I downloaded a bootdisk for windows 98, and I think it is working. However, I never installed Windows 98 SE before, so I need a couple of hints to help me out. I have Windows 2000 now. Here are the steps I took.
1. I installed the Windows 98 boot disk
2. I got a command prompt.
3. I typed FORMAT C: to delete the hard drive.
4. Then I typed FDISK to get to the to options.
5. It then aksed if I wanted to set up the windows98 partition, I said yes.
6. It then said something like changed made, plese restart your PC.
ok, here is my problem
7. After I restart, I go to the prompt again. What am I suppposed to type then? PLEASE, please help! Do I have to type in another command to begin installing windows 98? Please, anyone just get me in the right direction. Thanks.

you're on the right track. you got your partition setup right? Did you make the drive fat32? If not, do so.
Type: fdisk /mbr This will delete the master boot record on the drive.
Make sure the partition you have on your drive is set to active. This is all done through fdisk. Once you have your c drive in fat 32, and it is active, restart your computer with the bootup disk, and place the cd in the drive.
Assuming that you don't have any other partitions on the drive, d: will be your cd drive.
At the prompt, type: d:
then, type: setup, and you should be ready to go...

Thanks a lot friend :) BTW, I can't boot from DOS mode, in case that is what you want me to do. My PC can only boot from th floppy. But this should work right? The floppy has to get me started, and tell my PC to read the CD. Thanks a lot.

I did all those things and it didn't work :( This is what I did in order
1. I inserted wins 98 SE floppy in A drive
2. I typed FORMAT C:
3. After it was done, I ran FDISK
4. I then deleted the partition because it still showed my wins 2000 there, as an (unknown) OS
5. I then created a partition (wins 98SE)
6. I selected make partition active. It then ran through a bunch of checks and then said you must restart your Pc for changes to take effect.
7. I restarted the PC, and came to the A:\ prompt again. I then typed what you said fdisk/mbr
8. I tried typing D:, and D:\, for the D drive, and it always said something like invalid drive
9. I then tried typing every letter, but it always said invalid drive.
10. I know my PC cannot boot from CD, because my BIOS is outdated. There has to be a way to get the setup to run for Windows 98 SE. :(

1st, do fdisk /mbr
then do fdisk
then delete all the partitions.
Restart,
go to fdisk again.
create your partition, and make it active.
Restart again.
from the a: prompt, type: format c:
wait for the format to finish.
Restart with the bootable disk again.
It'll ask you if you want cd support, say yes. that will install your drivers for your cd drive.
Then, once that's done, your d: drive should be the cd drive. Make sure the 98 cd is inside, and try to access it.If that doesn't work, then maybe your bootable disk isn't good...
good luck .. :)

hehe oh I can see why it didn't work the first time since I did it backwards :P I am hesititant whether or not I want to try it again today or not :/ Two formats and waiting an hour 3and a half each isn't fun :( Another reason why I am not sure if it will work or not is because I got a copy of Windwos 98 SE from a friend. Darnit, I am anxious now, I may try it! Thanks, and if it works, I wish good luck in your future friend :)

Kinyo, a standard Win98 bootdisk creates a RAMDrive as D: & will bump your CD one drive letter assignment (to E:). If you're using a non-standard bootdisk, pay attention to the startup screens. It should tell you what letter the CD has been assigned.

Ok, I got to the setup screen, I had to type the letter R:\ for the CD-Drive :/ Don't ask me how I figured that out :P Anyway, now I need the product key :( I dont have the case, how can I find out what the code is? I tried going to Kazaa and I downloaded a CD-KEY, but am I supposed to drag it to a certain folder? Man, there is always a problem :( Thanks
