Ok I have this pc right here, it wont boot cause it wont find the WIN.COM file : "Cannot find win.com, unable to continue loading windows."
So I searched google, and landed on Micros---s site, explaining how to cure the problem.(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q136630)
It says to extract the win.cnf file from the Win 98 SE cd, in the Win98_25.cab. I extracted the entire cab, and there was no WIN.CNF. So I decided to extract all the cabs on the win 98 CD, and guess what, still no win.cnf file. Micros--- must be smokin some good stuff.
So I'm running out of luck, can anyone please send me their WIN.COM file for a windows 98 SE copy please.
Thanks a million!

I just looked on my Win98 SE disk and it's right where Mircosoft said it is. Look in the WIN98_25.CAB. It's the 7th file.

I just extracted win.cnf using CabX.bat
Instructions on how to create and use CabX.bat can be found Here.
Handy little tool.It shows up in the folder named simply as "WIN".
If I right click and select Properties it shows the MSDOS name to be "win.cnf" 25kb.
My PC is set to show all files and all extensions.
Do you still want it emailed or did you succeed at extracting it using SFC from within the Run command box?
Start, Run, sfc, Extract one file from installation disk, (named) win.cnf, click start.
Next window: extract from D:\Win98 (where D: is presumed to be your CD rom drive) or from file and destination = C:\Windows.
Rename win.cnf to win.com from within DOS using:
ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.comBryan

You must be doing something wrong. If you have a W98"SE" disk it is definitely in WIN98_25.CAB as stated.
Because you can't get into Windows you will obviously need to do the DOS extract. Use a boot (or startup) disk with CD-ROM support.
Make up a folder such as c:\file
Then type this (assuming your CD is E):
extract e:\wub98\win98_25.cab win.cnf /L c:\fileYou should then be able to rename it to win.com and copy it to c:\windows

Hi
Suggest bootdisk - at dos prompt type.
dir win.* /s
dir win.* /ah /sWhat do you have?
If you note you already have a win.com file, then suspect the msdos.sys pathing problem.
